The “big bang” of SPIC MACAY came in 1972 at a concert of Ustad Aminuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. The idea took a more defined direction in 1977 in India. In early 1978, a concert of the Dagar Bandhu, was held at IIT Delhi. In 1979, a two day programme again held at IIT Delhi of Ustad Bismillah Khan, Dagar Bandhu, Ustad Amjad Khan and Ustad Shahid Parvez. It was in this programme that the name SPIC MACAY was launched and the aim expressed was not to fight westernization but the process of deculturisation. 1986 saw the introduction of folk arts & crafts into the age old guru-shishya tradition. This was the year that the first annual convention was held at Hyderabad. In 1988 the first programme was conducted abroad: Pandit Jasraj sang at the University Of Connecticut at Harford.Virasat, a festival comprising performances, workshops in folk, classical arts, literature, theatre, cinema, yoga and other areas of our heritage was launched for the first time in Dehradun in the year 1995. Our Chapter was started in 1985 in the erstwhile University of Roorkee.

The Department of Mathematics attained its present status of an independent department in 1960. Growing steadily, today the department not only teaches various topics in mathematics to undergraduate and postgraduate students of different engineering and science departments, but also runs its own M.Sc. Courses in Industrial Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The department also conducts an interdisciplinary MCA Course. Recently the department has started 5 year Integrated M.Sc. degree program in Applied Mathematics where admission is made through JEE. Besides the central Computing facilities of the Institute, the department has its own state of the art Computational Lab and a Mathematical Modelling Lab. The Department also offers facilities for research work leading to Ph.D. degree in different branches of Pure and Applied Mathematics. The department has so far produced over 150 Ph.D's including some foreign students. Department has collaborations with different national and international organizations and has expertise in various fields of mathematics and offers consultancies in mathematical modelling and solution of various industrial and real life problems. The faculty also joins different industrial research and consultancy teams to mutually solve problems of higher mathematical contents. The Department of Mathematics also has expertise in various fields of Computer Science and Technology and several subjects of this field have been and are being taught by the teachers of the department, specifically in programming languages and techniques, fuzzy networks, simulation and modeling, Robotics and computer graphics. To keep abreast of the latest developments, the department keeps on periodically updating and revising its teaching and research schemes and introduce new courses.

The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1963 with B.Tech. programme in Chemical Engineering and is currently the largest department in the country having largest intake in its M.Tech. programme. It is a pioneer in starting the Master’s level academic programmes in Computer Aided Process Plant Design, Industrial Pollution Abatement, and Industrial Safety and Hazards Management; and Dual Degree Programme in Hydrocarbon Engineering beside offering research opportunities in all important areas of chemical engineering leading to PhD degree. The department has well equipped computational facilities.

Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The Institute ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. The Institute has completed 150th year of its existence in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The Ordinance is now converted into an Act by the Parliament to make IIT, Roorkee as an "Institution of National Importance". The Institute offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres. The Institute admits students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centres all over India.
