Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology (JIST), formerly known as Jorhat Science College was established by the Govt. of Assam in the year 1971 and has recently completed its glorious 40 years. The College is offering three year degree course with major in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. From the academic session 2007-2008, three year six semester bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.Sc. in IT) course was introduced. Govt. of Assam, vide notification No. ATE.226/2008/3 dated 18th November 2008 and upgraded the college and renamed it as Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology registered under Societies Registration Act XXI 1860. The 4 year Bachelor of Engineering courses in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETC) and Power Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering (PEI) from the academic session 2009-10 were introduced. The courses are approved by AICTE and the institute is affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Assam. JIST is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 200 acres of land on the outskirts of Jorhat district, the heart of Upper Assam, amid breathtaking scenery. It is well connected with the rest of the country by air, railways and bus facility. It is situated on National Highway- 37, 9km to the East of Jorhat town/railway station and 15km on the East of Jorhat airport and 25km from Mariani Railway Station. Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology is a premier institute in North-Eastern India offering B.Sc. and B.E. courses. Starting from class XI till PG & MPhil, COMIT encompasses different educational programs under its wings. This is a huge loss to the state economy in terms of man and money. A survey stated that most of the students went out during nineties for acquiring knowledge in computers. A ray of hope emerged in the form of Computer Point, a national institute in Jorhat. This institute was a pathfinder to computer education in Jorhat. Economical development and utilization of Human Resources are two most important aspects for growth & development of a nation. Thus the need of an educational institute arises in Jorhat which can shape the future human resources. Looking at an unstable economy of Assam, it was like building castle in the air. Fortunately, this distant dream was fulfilled with a learning center of distance education directorate of the Sikkim Manipal University. Under the academic banner of COMIT, it started to conduct career oriented programs at the Diploma, Bachelor’s, PG Diploma and Master’s levels. SMU programs combine highly researched curriculum by the university integrated with industry relevant concepts & practices. Gradually COMIT grew up as an highly sought after institute in Jorhat. Till 2005, the institutes were run in rented premises. In February, 2005 COMIT was shifted to their own complex at Choladhara. At this point, COMIT group welcomed another wing Mentors’ House Junior College for +2 statandard education in Commerce and Science under state council. Today, in time of globalization, the economy is so opened up that Jorhat can’t be left behind in competition. Considering the need of time, COMIT group started a coaching center for entrance examinations to business schools and Law schools as a franchisee of leading coaching center Career Launcher in 2008. Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are government-run training organizations. Normally a person who has passed 10 standard is eligible for admission to ITI. The objective of opening of ITI is provide technical manpower to industries. These persons are trained in basic skills required to do jobs of say operator or a craftsman. The course in ITI is designed in way to impart basic skill in the trade specified. The duration of course may vary from one year to three years depending upon trade opted. After completion of desired period of training the person is eligible to appear in the AITT ( All India Trade Test ) conducted by NCVT( National Council for Vocational training ). After successfully passing AITT , the person is awarded NATIONAL TRADE CERTIFICATE (NTC)in concerning trade by NCVT.
