The College came into existence on 7th January, 1959 at H.R.H.P.O.W. Institute of Engineering & Technology, Jorhat with the then Principal of the Institute, Sri H.N. Barua also as the Principal in-charge of Jorhat Engineering College. The College started functioning with admission of its first batch of students in Civil Engineering, on 10th October, 1960. With a glorious journey, the College currently offers AICTE recongnised B.E. courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science & Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. While the College has been offering three-year post graduate course leading to Master of Computer Application (M.C.A.) since 1987, AICTE approval has been received for offering M.E. course in Mechanical Engineering.

Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology is a premier institute in North-Eastern India offering B.Sc. courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science & Information Technology along with two B.E Courses in (i) Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ii) Power Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering. Formerly the Institute was known as Jorhat Science College established by Govt. of Assam in the year 1971 and has recently completed its glorious 40 years. In the year 2008 Govt. of Assam, upgraded the college and renamed it as Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology registered under Societies Registration Act. Till then the college was offering U.G. courses only in science subjects. From the academic session 2009-10 the above mentioned Technical Courses were introduced in addition to the existing B.Sc. courses after getting the approval from AICTE with an intake capacity of 60 for each course. The institute is affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Assam.

The idea of encouraging the growth of Secondary Schools with a common syllabus and medium of instruction for the benefit of the children of Central Government employees, including defence personnel liable to frequent transfers was first approved in November, 1962, by the Government of India. Consequently, Central Schools Organisation was started as a unit of the Ministry of Education, now Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Govt. of India, so that the education of their children was not disrupted due to their frequent and sudden transfers in public interest. Initially, 20 Regimental Schools, then functioning at places having large concentration of defence personnel, were taken over as Central Schools during the academic year 1963-64.

Jorhat (Assamese: যোৰহাট ) is one of the largest cities in the Indian state of Assam. It is situated 307 kilometres (191 mi) east of Guwahati. Jorhat was established as the new capital in the closing years of the 18th century by the decaying and declining Tunkhungia Ahom Dynasty. Jorhat, as the name signifies, was just a couple (Jor) of markets (Hat). Two parallel markets namely, Chowkihut and Macharhut, lay on the eastern and the western banks of the river Bhogdoi. Jorhat was "The last Capital of the Ahom Kingdom", has archeological values associated to Rajamaidan— the last burial mounds of the Ahom kings. Nestled in the tea gardens dotted around sprawling in and around the city, boosts of the Tocklai Research Association (TRA) is the oldest and the largest tea research station of its kind in the world. Jorhat today has grown into a thriving cosmopolitan city with a strong sense of character and identity.
