The Government Sri Pratap College, Srinagar commonly known as S. P. College is about to complete one hundred years of its existence. The first intermediate college in the valley of Srinagar came into existence when its progenitor, Hindu High School, Srinagar was upgraded by the Central Hindu College Trust, Banaras (to which it was affiliated). The Government of J&K took over this intermediate college in 1911 and renamed it as Sri Pratap College in the name of the then ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh. Simultaneously, the said intermediate college was upgraded to a degree college to offer Bachelor's degree in Arts (B.A) with English as compulsory subject alongwith three other subjects to be selected amongst Mathematics and other subjects of Humanities and social sciences. The Science streams continued at the intermediate level. The S. P. College was affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore in 1911. The (Non-Medical) stream was upgraded to the degree level in 1920 in Physics and Chemistry. The affiliation of the college shifted to University of Jammu and Kashmir in 1948. The Medical Science stream was upgraded to the degree level in 1951. Geography was reintroduced as a subject in 1964. On bifurcation of University of Jammu and Kashmir to the University of Jammu and University of Kashmir, the S. P. College was affiliated to University of Kashmir and continues to be so till date. The college was recognized by UGC in June 1972..... This Government-funded college is centrally located in the city of Srinagar. The college campus is spread over an area of 14.56 acres. With the de-linking of the Arts faculty from S. P. College in 1975, it is now exclusively a Science College, imparting education in a broad spectrum of subjects of medical and non-medical streams. Subject of Geology was introduced in 1975 and that of Electronics in 1976. A vocational course on Environmental and Water Management was started in 1996 and Biochemistry was introduced in 2000. Another vocational course on Information Technology was introduced in 2002. The college started to offer M.Sc in Environmental Sciences from the academic session 2003. IT, Environment & Water Management and MSc Environmental Sciences are co-educational. The mission of the college is to be a powerful agency for human resource development through fostering the potentialities and talents of its students so that they are desirably equipped for playing socially and economically useful roles in the society. The vision of the college is to achieve a notable level of academic excellence and catch up with the global standards in higher education. With the aforesaid vision and mission of the college, it has embarked upon the implementation of programmes to ensure the realization of following goals and objectives: a) to bring about diversification and vocationalisation of courses to make higher education more job-oriented b) to strive to become fully autonomous and have freedom to design and introduce socially relevant courses of study and apply new educational technologies to make teaching - learning process more effective c) to attain a full-fledged postgraduate college status. The Peer Team, consisting of Dr. M. P. Kapoor (Chairman), Ex-Director, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and Thapar Centre for Industrial Research and Development, Patiala, Dr. M. Iqbal (Member), Prof. of Botany, Hamdard University, New Delhi and Dr. M. R. Kurup (Member Coordinator), Principal (Rtd), Kelkar-Vaze College, Mumbai, visited the college on 26 & 27 August, 2004. It interacted with different stake-holders, viz., Director of Colleges, Govt. of J&K, Dean of Colleges, University of Kashmir, Principal of the College, faculty members, non-teaching staff, a representative section of students, and a group of alumni and parents and validated the SSR from the documents. Based on the Self Study Report, documentary evidence, and the aforesaid interactions, category-wise report with commendations and suggestions is given as under: CRITERION-I: CURRICULAR ASPECT With a view to fulfill its mission, goals and objectives, the college has been offering undergraduate programmes in B.Sc., a postgraduate programme in Environmental Sciences, and a Research programme in Hydrobiology leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. Besides General English, which is compulsory, the undergraduate students have options to offer three choice based subjects out of Mathematics, Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Bio-chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Geography, Environment & Water Management and Information Technology . The college has received sanction from UGC & State Government to start three add-on-career oriented certificate/diploma courses in Web Designing, Video Editing and Environmental Auditing, besides a two-year PG Diploma Course in Environmental Studies under Innovative Programmes - Teaching & Research in Interdisciplinary and emerging Areas. Being an affiliated college, it has limited role to play in framing and updating the syllabi. However, some teachers of the college have contributed to the curriculum design as members of different academic bodies and committees of the University. The college authorities have shown dynamism in introducing contemporary career-oriented programmes such as Electronics, Biochemistry, Geology, Information Technology, Environment and Water Management. A certain degree of flexibility is available to the students, as they can choose one combination of three optional subjects of their choice out of multiple combinations available in the college. The college has staff committees for monitoring the implementation of the syllabi prescribed by the affiliating university. CRITERION-II TEACHING-LEARNING AND EVALUATION The students are admitted on the basis of merit and entrance test as prescribed by the University. The college has a mechanism of assessing students' knowledge and skills after admission, and has also provided for remedial classes to the educationally disadvantaged students. Advanced learners are also similarly encouraged. The teachers make a teaching plan and the syllabi are unitized. Lecture method of teaching is made learner-centered by way of field trips, group discussions, debates, seminars, symposia and the use of audio-visual aids. The college follows annual system of examinations as prescribed by the university and the scheme is communicated to the students through Prospectus and Notice Boards. However, semester system is followed in the post graduate programme. While quite a good number of teachers have published articles in national journals, a few have published papers in reputed international journals. The teachers are recruited on merit by the Administrative Department of the Government/through the Public Service Commission. The college has freedom to appoint adhoc (contract basis) teaching staff for a specific period on consolidated salary through the administrative department of the government. During the last two years, 15 teachers have attended national level conferences, of which 2 were resource persons. One teacher attended an international seminar. About 15 teachers have participated in faculty development programmes. Some of the teachers are members/fellows of professional organizations. The college follows the self-appraisal method of evaluation of performance of teachers as prescribed by the government. Students also evaluate the teachers. CRITERION III RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION Besides those who have registered for Ph.D and M.Phil, the post-graduate students are also actively engaged in research by way of projects and assignments. Four full-time and one part-time scholar are registered for Ph.D. degree at present. Two teachers are recognized research (M.Phil, Ph.D) guides. Apart from adjustment of teaching schedule, the teachers are given study leave for research whenever requested for. The college has published a Newsletter during this year. Srinagar (Garhwal) is that city where "Aadi Shakracharya JI" dropped in the city after taking some "Siddies"from "Lord Shiva". After this he was getting down from the Kailash parvat (mountain) he was moving very fastly after establishing a very special series of the holy & Siidh temples of "Lord Shiva's". "Aadi Shakracharya JI" Had a freat true faith in the power Or blessings of "Lord Shiva's". So"Aadi Shakracharya JI" woludn't give any attention to any other God or Godess."Aadi Shakracharya JI" had felt proud to chant "Lord Shiva". But it's also true that "Lord Shiva" is nothing without the great grace of "Aadi Shakti". So "Aadi Shakti" came to him to realize that I'm more powerful than Lord Shiva, if U'll chant for some for me only than U'll get more something more special. And "Aadi Shakracharya JI" refuses her and go ahead. But "Aadi Shakti" don't take it to ill, and again make him understand but again "Aadi Shakracharya JI" refuses and denny the power of "Aadi Shakti" then "Aadi Shakti"challanged him to show who is more powerful me or Lord Shiva & tell him special also that the Shiva is Lord 'coz I had provided him all the Shakti to Lord Shiva & U too. Again Lord Shiva ignord her then "Aadi Shakti" take back all the "shakti"which is provided to"Aadi Shakracharya JI". Now "Aadi Shakracharya JI" had got good & heavy & frequent loose motions. And after every time of loosing stool he take bath in the river. Finally "Aadi Shakracharya JI" found himself very weak very soon and a time came when he had fallen down over his loosed stool and again found himself powerless to make a moment in his fingure. "Aadi Shakti" was sitting just a far away and seeing his all activities. At this moment "Aadi Shakti" told him to call Ur Shiva he is just take back all powers from U and Shiva, now Shiva became as a "Shav".Now he realize his Mistake now he had start chanting "Aadi Shakti" by "Apradh Chama Sctroter" which is the part of "Durga Saptshati". (Kouputro Jayete Kwachidapi Kumatta na Bhawati)................. great method of surrendered in the feet of "Aadi Shakti".Temple is known as Kamelashwar Mahadev Mandir.
