Inception of Garhwal University on Dec. 1 st 1973 was the fulfillment of a long cherished dream of the local people .The University was established under the provisions of Uttar Pardesh State Universities Act (Act No. 10 of 1973) on 1.12.1973 and the Act come in force w.e.f. 1.12.1973. The name of the university was rechristened to Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in 1989 in commemoration of the memory of a leading statesman of the country, the son of the soil Shri Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, and subsequently established as Central University under the provision of the Central Universities Ordinance, 2009, No.3 of 2009 published in the gazette of India, extraordinary Part-II, Sec-I, New Delhi, 15 January 2009. Our University is among the ten largest Universities of the country with 3 campuses and more than 180 affiliated colleges and institutes (both state run/aided and self financed) and examining approximately 150000 students annually, providing higher education services in 7 out of the 13 Districts of the State of Uttarakhand. The University is blessed with state of art research facilities, some of the best teachers and close academic relations with a number of premier institutions. With its Headquarters at Srinagar some 108 K.M. from Rishikesh along the Delhi-Niti National Highway, Birla Campus at Srinagar (bisected into two halves. the Srinagar Campus and the Chauras Campus by the river Alaknanda), BGR Campus set on enticing mountain slopes at Pauri (29 K.M. from Srinagar and some 100 K.M. from Kotdwar, the nearest railway station) and SRT Campus at Badshahi Thaul amidst dense pine forest (some 85 K.M. from Srinagar and 65 K.M. from Rishikesh on the route to Gangotri). the University offers a variety of higher learning courses and academic programmes through 10 Faculties. As a mark of the appreciation of its importance and achievements it has been upgraded as a Central University. Srinagar Garhwal is situated (30 0 13' N /78 046' E) in Pauri District of Garhwal region of Uttaranchal on the bank of river Alaknanda in mid-Himalaya. Being the royal capital of the erstwhile rulers of Garhwal in the past, variously known as Sripur, Srikshetra and Danush Teertha, it remained capital of Garhwal kingdom till 1805 AD; thereafter the centre of Gorkha rule till 1850 AD and administrative centre of British till 1890 AD. The historic township enroute to the supershrine resorts of Kedarnath and Badrinath is well linked by road to all the prominent places of the region, including the three rail heads- Rishikesh, Kotdwara and Dehradun. Of late, Srinagar has strongly emerged as a centre of higher learning and research with the establishment of the University. Dhari Devi is a temple on the banks of the Alaknanda River in the Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand state, India. It houses the upper half of an idol of the goddess Dhari that, according to local lore, changes in appearance during the day from a girl, to a woman, and then to an old lady.[citation needed] The idol's lower half is located in Kalimath, where mata is prayed in Kali roop. This shrine is one of 108 shakti sthals in India, as numbered by Srimad Devi Bhagwat.

माँ धारी देवी सिद्ध पीठ उत्तराखंड राज्य मे श्रीनगर से १५ किलोमीटर की दुरी पर कल्यासौड़ नामक स्थान पर बद्रीनाथ राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग पर अलकनंदा नदी के तट पर स्थित है, राजमार्ग से १/२ कि.मी. पैदल मार्ग से चल कर मंदिर पहुंचा जा सकता है | आद्य शक्ति माँ धारी देवी दक्षिणेश्वर काली ,कल्याणी काली तथा तारेश्वरी देवी के नाम से भी विख्यात है | माँ धारी शमशानेश्वरी दिगम्बरी भी है सो स्वयं को किसी भी बंधन व वितान मे बंधना पसंद नहीं करती | माँ धारी सूर्य कि गति के साथ-साथ अपना रूप भी बदलती है प्रातः काल बालिका , मध्ह्यान यौवना , सांय काल वृद्धा | वैसे तो पुरे वर्ष ही इस सिद्ध पीठ पर माँ के भक्त माँ के दरबार मे दर्शनों को आते ही रहते है, पर नवरात्री उत्सव (चैत्र व शारदीय ) मे भक्तों की भीड़ उमड़ पड़ती है| इस समय मंदिर मे माँ धारी की विशेष पूजा अर्चना और दुर्गा - सप्तशती का अनवरत पाठ और भंडारे का आयोजन किया जाता है | माँ धारी देवी अपने भक्तों पर विशेष अनुग्रह रखती है और मात्र श्रद्धा भक्ति से सुमिरन करने पर ही प्रसन्न हो जाती है, फिर भी भक्त यहाँ पर अपनी मनोकामनाओ के पूरा होने पर माँ को घंटा, नारियल, वस्त्र व आभूषण अर्पित करते है | माँ धारी जाग्रत और जीवित देवी है जिसे सच्चे मन से स्मरण करने से ही मनचाहे सभी काम सिद्ध होते है | जय माँ धारी देवी | जय माँ धारी : - अनंत काल से माँ जगदम्बे धारीदेवी सिद्धपीठ मे नीलघन श्यामवर्णा वृहद काया पूर्ण यौवना, विस्फारित नेत्रयुक्ता शत्रु संहारिणी रूप मे स्थित है |माँ धारी दसो दिशाओ मे व्याप्त हो कर अपने भक्तों के कल्याण हेतु सदा दयार्द भाव से अपने विशाल नेत्रों द्वारा देखती है | जगत जननी जगदम्बे यहाँ शांत कल्याणशोभना और करुणामयी रूप मे विराजमान है जो सदा जन-जन की सद-इच्छाओ की पूर्ति करती है | किन्तु कभी-कभी क्रोधित होने पर माँ अपने दांतों को किटकिटाती और कोलाहल करती है | अपने विशाल नेत्रों की क्रोधाग्नि से पल भर मे सब कुछ विध्वंश कर डालती है | आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य जब सनातन धर्म के कीर्ति स्तम्भ केदारनाथ और बद्रीनाथ धाम की स्थापना पश्चात् धारी देवी सिद्ध पीठ के समीप पहुंचे तब अत्यंत बीमार होने पर उन्होंने यहाँ पर जगत जननी माँ जगदम्बे की स्तुति की और अपने अपराधो के लिए माँ कल्याणशोभना से क्षमा प्रार्थना की तब माँ भगवती ने उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया और आरोग्य प्रदान किया | आज भी माँ धारी देवी की दर्शन आरती आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य द्वारा रचित देव्यपराधक्षमापनस्त्रोतम से ही की जाती है | The temple of Dhari Devi is situated on the banks of river Alaknada. One has to travel a distance of 15 kms. from Srinagar (Pauri Garhwal) on Srinagar-Badrinath highway upto Kaliya Saur, then down trek another half a kilometer towards Alaknanda river... According to a local legened, the temple was once washed off by floods, while floating the idol struck against a rock, the villagers heard the cries of the idol. On reaching the site they heard a divine voice instructing them to install the idol as it was, on the spot it was found. Since then the fierce looking idol remains where it was, known as Dhari Devi, under the open sky, and thousands of devotees on the way to Badrinath pay their obeisance to it. The temple of Dhari Devi in Srinagar hosts only the upper part of idol of Godess Dhari, the remaining lower part is believed to be in Kalimath in Rudraprayag district. It is believed that the idol of Dhari Devi shall not be put under roof. For the same reason, the idols in Dhari Devi Temple are put under open sky. Taking photographs of Dhari Devi idols is strictly prohibited. The village near the temple is name after godess Dhari and known as Dhari Village. A hanging bridge over Alaknanda river connects the Dhari Devi temple to Dhari Village
