Baselius College, Kottayam

Baselius College, Kottayam

Our College was established in the year 1964 by a galaxy of eminent men to fulfil the long cherished dream of the Malankara Orthodox Christian Community to dedicate themselves to the service of God and man. This premier postgraduate institution that flourished from the precincts of the MD Seminary High School perpetuates the sacred memory of our heavenly patron His Holiness Baselius Geevarghese II, the late lamented Catholicos of the East, who steered the destiny of the Orthodox Church with grace and vision for more than three decades. The infant institution was given liberal shelter by the M.D. Seminary High School in its classrooms. The first manager, the late lamented H.G. Mathews Mar Ivanios Metropolitan of Kottayam and the first Principal, the late Dr. A.P. Mani, and the members of the Governing Board took personal interest in the development of the college. Only Pre-degree courses were offered then. In the year 1966, this junior college was upgraded and degree courses were started. It was indeed a milestone in the growth of the college. By and by, classrooms were made available for housing the various batches and classes. Academic honours followed one after another. The college soon made an impressive name in sports and games too. New structures sprang up as a result of generous contributions made by the public and with the financial assistance from the management. The college was then under a single management. Later the college was brought under the Educational Agency of the MOC Colleges in 1979 and His Grace Daniel Mar Philexinos took over the reins as the Corporate Manager. After H.G. Mar Philexinos’ demise, H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas and later H.G. Philipose Mar Eusebius and still later H.G. Dr. Yakob Mar Irenaios took up the charge of Corporate Managers. Currently, the mantle is on H.G. Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan under whose able stewardship the College is all set to scale greater heights. During the last forty six years of its illustrious existence, the college could produce brilliant academicians, administrators, politicians as also sports prodigies who represented our nation in international tournaments. The college is now poised for meeting the challenges of the 21st century. The college now offers Under Graduate programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Malayalam, Commerce, Zoology, Botany, English, Economics and Politics & Post-Graduate courses in English, Commerce, Economics, Physics and Chemistry and Research Programme in English. With the starting of B.Com (Office Management and Secretarial Practice) in 1996, the college has entered a new phase of vocationalisation of education. Various funds released from the UGC under its general development programmes and also COSIP and COHSIP schemes make every department more or less well-tuned to the task of personality development and academic progress of the students. With several intra-departmental and inter departmental activities all round the year, the student community stands to gain in a big way. The campus is made vibrant by several co-curricular and extra curricular activities. There are subject associations in all departments, clubs to promote artistic talents of students, tutorial system to facilitate greater inter-personal interaction and relationship, NSS units to strengthen the sense of national integration and social commitment, NCC battalion to inculcate a sense of discipline and national defence, and above all a unit of the MGOCSM to nurture and nourish the spiritual needs of the students. There is also a full-fledged computer centre which imparts basic training to our students. The Audio-Visual Centre facilitates educational sessions through different packages. According to the 1991 census, it is the first district to achieve 100% literacy rate in the whole of India. Panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands, hills and hillocks, rubber plantations and places associated with many legends given Kottayam District the enviable title: The land of letters, legends, latex and lakes. The district is 15.35% urbanised.HistoryKottayam literally means the interior of a fort - Kotta + Akam. Rulers of Munjanad and Thekkumkur had their headquarters at Thazhathangadi near Kottayam town. Marthanda Varma of Travancore attacked Thekkumkur and destroyed the palace and the Thaliyil Fort. The remnants of the palaces and forts are still seen here.Kottayam has played its role in all the political agitations of modern times. The 'Malayali Memorial' agitation may be said to have had its origin in Kottayam. The Malayali Memorial sought to secure better representation for educated Travancoreans in the Travancore civil service against persons from outside. The Memorial, which was presented to the Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal (1891) was drafted at a public meeting held in the Kottayam Public Library. The event marked the beginning of the modern political movement in the state.
