St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church is an ancient Orthodox Syrian Church situated in the prestigious town of Kottayam, in Kerala state, India, with His Holyness The Catholics of the East as its supreme head, better known as Kottayam Cheriapally (Small Church) The fact that 3 Metropolitans of the Orthodox Syrian Church emanated from 3 families of the Kottayam, is of great honor. They were H.G. Mar Dionasious, Malankara Metropolitan who hailed from Punnathara family, H.G. Mar Theophilos who hailed from Varikkat family and H.G. Mar Athanatious who hailed from Chackalaparambil family. The sculptures of St.Mary and the figures of angels carved in wood and made in stone, the bas-relief of the fauna and the flora are a glowing tribute to the skills of the artisans of the Thekkumkoor era. The mural paintings in the sanctum sanctorum (madbhaha) have been inspiring worshippers to attain heights of spiritual experience since the founding of the church. On the southern side of church wall we can see a statue of St. Mary about 2 feet tall. There is big bell erected above the sanctum sanctorum (madbhaha), which was brought from Goa. The baptism basin (font) seen inside the church is chiseled from a single stone. The walls of the church are more than one meter thick. The roof of the "Natakasala"(portico) has been supported by ten granite pillars. The lotus-shaped is carved out of single piece of granite, the beautiful carvings on the beams, the huge doors of the church, stone tablets and wood with inscription in ancient script etc tell us of its glorious history. The huge wall built around the church compound is modeled after the Hindu temple walls of those periods. Hundred of small traditional oil lamps made of stone are fixed on the wall, which itself is reminder of Indian culture. The average height of wall is about 8 ½ feet. After a gap of two stone oil lamps there are square holes whose size is about 4 inch, thru which you can see inside or outside the church compound. A beautiful and spacious “Pallimeda” (parsonage) was constructed on the south-east part of the church compound during the 19th century and had been used as the head quarters of “MalanKara Metropolitan” till the early part of the 20th century. H. G. Pulikkottil Mar Dionysius stayed here for a long time and was heavenly abided in 1909. The patriarch of Antioch, H.H. Moran Mar Pathros also stayed here when HH visited Kerala in 1876.. Mar Gabriel, a Nestorian bishop who had been staying here, passed away in 1731 and was buried here. H.G. Punnathra Mar Dionysius who passed away in 1825 was buried in the sanctum sanctorum (madbhaha) of the church. There are records proving representatives from Cheriapally had taken part in the “Coonan Kurishu declaration “ at Mattanchery in 1653 and the synod at Mulanthuruthy in 1876.while the church was in the hands of Marthoma Church, their first bishop after breaking away from Ma1alankara Orthodox Church, Mat Theethoos was anointed at this Church
