Hooghly Branch (Govt.) School is one of the oldest, glorious and historic school in India. A primary school was eshtablished in Chinsurah by Robbert May of London Missionary Society in 1814. After this, 36 primary school was started in Chinsurah. But after the death of Robbert May (1818) 22 schools were abolished. The school situated in Hooghly was taken by District Magistrate Mr. D.C.Smith on the basis of the application of the missionaries.With the help of the donations donated by Raja Mahatabchandra Bahadur(Bardhawan), Jamidar Jaikrishna Mukhopadhya(Uttarpara), Dwarakanath Tagore e.t.c this school was developed as Subcription School in the year 1834. It was the first English School after Kolkata.
The school was started on 9th July, 1836. on 1st August, 1836 ahen the Hooghly College was eshtablished, this school was included in the college and known as HOOGHLY BRANCH (GOVT.) SCHOOL The Madrasa(which was related with Hooghly Iamambara) was marged with this school. In the year 1902 it was taken by Inspector of Schools.
The first Headmaster of this school was Mr.Ishanchandra Bandhopadhya. Mr.Parbaticharan Sarkar was the Headmaster when this school was a branch of Hooghly College.
9th July, 1836 the school was started with two teachers and five students. 4th December, 1837 when this school was known as HOOGHLY BRANCH (GOVT.) SCHOOL then the number of student was 227. In the next year, the number of students raised(364). Now, almost 1000 students are studying in this school. Almost 45 teachers are teaching.
The school has four buildings, two playground, library, common room & well equipped laboratories(Computer, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics). Many students of this school has achived the success in their life. Some of them are: Mr.Saratchandra Chattopadhya, Chief Judge of Supreme Court Mr.Bijanbihari Mukharjee, I.C.S Mr.Satyendranath Modak and Mr.Mohan Bandhopadhya, Dr.Naliniranjan Sengupta, Dr.Subodh Mitra, Dr.Prasad Das Mallick, Mr.Yogendralal Chowdhuri, Great freedom fighter Mr.Bhupati Majumdar, Mr.Bijay Modak, Mr.Sirajul Hock, Swami Nirmalananda, Principal Girishchandra Basu, Prof Ambikacharan Mitra, Mr.Maheshchandra Mitra, Great footballer Mr.Surajit Sengupta, Dr.Ashoke Bannerjee, Mr.Radharaman Chakraborty, Ex-M.P Mr.Rupchand Paul and many more.
