Government Brijindra College, Faridkot, founded by Sardar Harindra Singh, erstwhile Maharaja of Faridkot, in the memory of his father, Brijindra Singh, is a premier co-educational institution in the comity of Colleges of Punjab. Established in 1942 in the holy city of Baba Sheikh Farid, it has developed to be one of the leading institutions of higher education, affiliated to the Punjabi University, Patiala. It enjoys the distinction of being the only Government College in Punjab to have B.Sc.(Agriculture) classes. Since the year of its inception, it has always been a multi-faculty college.
It began as a full-fledged college, affiliated to Punjab University, Chandigarh, having separate wings for different faculties such as Humanities, Science, Agriculture, Commerce and B.T. In year 1948, the commerce wing of this college was shifted to Patiala, and it started functioning as Bikram College of Commerce there. It is now the only college of commerce in Punjab. With the formation of Punjabi University, Patiala, this college got affiliation with the Punjabi University, Patiala. In 1966, M.A. classes in the subject of Punjabi were started. In seventies, the Punjabi University opened an Extension Centre in the campus of Brijindra College and M.A. History and Law classes were also introduced. . But gradually these university classes were also withdrawn from here. Commerce classes started in 1993 and M.A. Economics was also introduced. In addition, there are multi-faculties such as TDC in Humanities, Science, Commerce and Four years Degree Classes in Agriculture also now.
The Institution has become a name to be reckoned with. It has contributed to all round development of this area. It has been instrumental in furthering the cause of education. Many educational institutions in Faridkot and in nearby villages are being run by the old students of this college. S. Karnail Singh Doad, who happens to be the first student of this college, is the Chairperson of four leading public schools and a dental college in Faridkot., S. Inderjit Singh, Chairman of Baba Farid Public school and Law College, is also the pride product of this college. The word "Excellence" sums up the performance of this college in academics, sports and other activities.
