Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib
The College is situated at the historical town of Fatehgarh Sahib, a district head quarter about 4 kilometers from Sirhind Railway Station. Mata Gujri College was founded in 1957 to commemorate the supreme martyrdom of Mata Gujri, the revered mother of the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh. Facing the historic shrine of Fatehgarh Sahib, a living testimony of the unique sacrifice of the two younger Sahibzadas, Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh who were bricked alive by the tyrannical Mughal rulers, the college was built brick by brick by its founders.
Bibi Gurbachan kaur Mann, the founder of the college was a lady of great determination and dedication & vision whose sole ambition was to promote higher education in the area. Her visionary insight has proved prophetic, as this college has made gigantic strides in various spheres since its inception. Starting on a humble scale, the college now boasts of a sprawling campus spread over more than 25 acres.
The college was taken over by the S.G.P.C.,Amritsar in 1964. The College is under the overall management of S.G.P.C. The college made tremendous achievements and rapid progress under the able guidance, dynamic leadership, far-sighted vision and unstinted dedication of Panth Ratan, Late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra who remained the president of the college managing committee as well as the SGPC for a record period of more than 25 years. He was the main spirit behind the overall development of the college in various fields of education.
A man with a deep religious bent of mind & a very seasoned and committed leader S. Avtar Singh, President SGPC, is the president of the College Managing Committee.S. Dilmegh Singh, Secretary SGPC who is an able administrator & committed to the cause of education is the secretary of the Local Managing Committee. A senior Akali leader and well known philanthropist, eminent industrialist & a renowned transporter S Ranjit Singh Libra is the Addl. Secretary of Local Managing Committee. The college is bound to make rapid strides in every field under the worthy leadership of such luminaries
The college has a huge campus comprising of Research Centre, Management and Commerce Block, Science Block, Arts Block. It has a modern computer laboratory equipped with IBM Pentium-IV computers, server & internet facilities, a well stocked library with more than 55,000 Books, an Administrative Block, a Stadium with all modern amentias, a well furnished canteen, boys hostel and modern parking facilities. The college owns four buses to transport students from cities like Chandigarh, Patiala, Panchkula and some other areas. Lush lawns interspersed with eye-catching flowers and ornamental trees welcome the entrants in the College. An ultra modern Computer Research Center estimated to cost Rs. 1.5 crore is nearing completion and separate hostel for girls is under construction.
Besides running the traditional courses like BA, B.Sc., B. Com. and MA (Eco), M.Com. the college is also running successfully the prestigious professional courses Like MBA, MCA, M.Sc. (Bio Technology), M.Sc. (Bio Informatics), M.Sc. (IT), BCA, B.Sc.(Bio-technology) & PGDCA (Morning and Evening) etc. The UGC sponsored vocational courses in Functional English and Information Technology were introduced two years back and are benefiting the desirous students. From this year onwards, the college has started the much sought after professional courses like PG Diploma in Insurance and Risk management, PG Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication. The college has the unique distinction of introducing three UGC sponsored Career Oriented Courses in the fields of Seed Technology, Food Science and Quality Control and Mass Communication with effect from this academic year.
The classroom teaching is supplemented with ultra modern teaching aids and methodologies. Special emphasis is made on sports, co-curricular activities, social service and moral values to ensure the all-round development of the personalities of the students. Tours, travels and excursions are organised from time to time to give maximum exposure to the students. Lectures and seminars by eminent educationists and professionals are regular feature of the college curriculum. Interaction with the industrial and business world is maintained to give the students practical experience of the world they are expected to enter after the completion of their studies.
