Articulating the aspirations of the Sikhs & Punjabis settled all over the world and in different parts of India, S. Parkash Singh Badal, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Punjab formally announced the setting up of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar Sahib. This announcement was made at a mammoth congregation on September 1, 2004 at Sri Amritsar Sahib to commemorate the historic event of the 400th anniversary of the compilation and first installation of Adi (Guru) Granth Sahib. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee is a religious, humanitarian and charitable organization of the Sikhs; which apart from managing the Gurudwaras (holy shrines) of the Sikhs, has set up about 40 institutions of higher learning including a Medical college, four Engineering Institutes and scores of Professional Institutes and about 72 schools in Punjab & other states of India. The SGPC under the able & dynamic leadership of Jathedar Avtar Singh, President SGPC set up Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Centenary Memorial Trust in 2004 which established Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University under Punjab State Act 20 of 2008 at Fatehgarh Sahib near Chandigarh (India). The University has a mandate to focus on intensive study, research and training in areas of world religions; cultures and civilizations; eastern and western thought and other related disciplines of arts & humanities, social sciences, pure & applied sciences, engineering sciences and medical sciences. In order to prepare the young men and women to be 'Global Professionals', the university is simultaneously focusing on 'Emerging Technologies' including Biotechnology, Nano-technology, Information technology as well as emerging disciplines like Environment, Human rights and Empowerment of the Women and the Downtrodden. Core areas of studies, research and teaching will include comprehensive studies and research on Sri Guru Granth Sahib; Sikh theology, philosophy, history, tradition & development of Punjabi language and literature. The University has prepared a curriculum where stress has been given on Human, Moral & Ethical Values and concept of Universal Brotherhood in order to transform the raw young students into enlightened human beings & responsible citizens. Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University has state of the art building & infrastructure and highly qualified faculty. The University is taking global initiatives including MOUs with renowned international Universities like Cambridge University, UK. The University has appointed guest faculty from renowned international Universities like Cambridge University, UK & Massey University, New Zealand so that the students can have exposure to international trends & standards in academics. The University lays stress on overall personality development of the students by motivating them to participate in sports and extra curricular activities.
