Almost 40 years before on December 17, 1965 Delux Optic Centre appeared on the “OPTICAL MAP” of Baroda. Maharaja Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad(MP) inaugurated it, which was talk of the town then and proudfully is so till today. It was however, not a smooth sailing. General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College, Patiala is one of the most recognized institutions of the state of Punjab. It is well known not only for imparting quality education to its students but also for giving them the right platform and exposure to enhance their potentialities. The pillar of Sikh history- Dr. Ganda Singh was its first principal. Significant contributions were made by General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Trust in establishing the college. And since then the college has progressed by leaps and bounds. In 1991, the college was taken over by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee , Sri Amritsar. It continues to make progress under the able leadership of Jathedar Avtar Singh, the current President, S.G.P.C., Sri Amritsar. Today, there are around 2200 students and many more seeking admission every year. Many new courses have been introduced in this college. All this has been possible due to the valuable guidance provided by- S.G.P.C Presidents- Panth Rattan late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi, Bibi Jagir Kaur and Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar and educationists and visionary personas like - S. Dalmegh Singh, Secretary S.G.P.C, S. Harmail Singh Tohra, Ex-Minister and Additional Secretary College Managing Committee and Dr. Gurmohan Singh Walia, Director, Education S.G.P.C. The college has completed 51 years since its inception. The college has many achievements to its credit. The college functions in morning as well as evening shifts thus making optimum use of its infrastructure. It has also launched many professional and vocational courses. The infrastructure of the college boasts of a fully Wi-fi campus, air conditioned Library stacked with 30,000 books, a Soft Skills Lab, Well Equipped Gymnasium, Computer Labs and Smart Classrooms. Apart from providing academic opportunities, the creative capabilities of the students are channelized through the college magazine - 'The Patiala' published yearly. Various societies have been formed in the college like - Computonics Club, Biotech Society, Science Association, Commerce and Management Association, Gurmat Society, Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Environment Society and Literary Societies of English, Hindi and Punjabi to hone the skills of students. Youth Club, Nanhi Chaan Cell, Goodwill Cell and Population Education Club are committed to spread social awareness . Virasat Sambhal Club connects the students to their cultural roots. Also, sports is given its due importance in the curriculum. Sports day is organized annually and due to the efforts of the Department of Physical Education many of our students have showcased their sporting talent at the International level too. The site enjoys good views of the surrounding area. Jagannath Temple, Hatia dam and world famous HEC (Heavy Engineering Corporation) Plant is clearly observed from the stadium site. The stadium has been constructed in such a manner that shadow doesn’t fall on any of the nine pitches before 4.45 p.m, even on the shortest day of the year. There is another ground in the complex which has five main pitches and eight practice pitches. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 35,000 and 76 corporate boxes. The spectators can also enjoy view from two nearby hills on the East and West sides. The two pavilions, North and South, have five levels each which include VVIP areas, members' enclosure, donors' enclosure, president's box, the BCCI box and two large dressing rooms with separate dining space for players. Membrane roofs provide shade from the sun, and together with the elegant structure consisting of steel braces, contribute to the memorable appearance of the stadium.
