Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, Jalpaiguri ,
Jalpaiguri (Bengali: জলপাইগুড়ি Jôlpaiguṛi) is a town in the state of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of Jalpaiguri district, and the divisional headquarters of the North Bengal region. History Jalpaiguri was initially founded as a trading centre, as the origins of its name suggests. The name Jalpaiguri may come from the Bhutanese term je-le-pe-go-ri, which means 'a place where warm clothes are bought and sold'. Others attribute the name to the more common Bengali term jôlpai "olive" and thus the name meaning "town of olives". For some time, the town was capital of the Raikats of Baikunthapur. The town was part of the Duars area of the old Kamarupa and later the Bhutanese kingdoms, which was later annexed by the British in 1864. They divided the captured area into two parts and merged the eastern half into the Goalpara district (now in Assam) and converted the western half into a new district of Western Duars and then in 1869, it was reorganised and renamed to Jalpaiguri, with Jalpaiguri town becoming the district headquarters. The town saw its main boom period during the late 19th and early 20th century, when the British found the region north-east of the town (called the Dooars region), near the foothills of the Bhutan hills very suitable for tea cultivation. Within a very small period the area was dotted with thousands of tea gardens, with Jalpaiguri town becoming the port-of-call for all going to those gardens. People flocked to the town to lay their hands on a part of the lucrative tea-trade. This resulted in the cosmopolitan nature of the town, with people from many parts of the country settling there. Business boomed and the town established itself as the premier commercial and cultural hub of the northern Bengal region. It also helped that the town was well connected with Kolkata (then Calcutta), as it lay on the main Railway link between Calcutta and Darjeeling (via the Hardinge Bridge and Parbatipur junction, now in Bangladesh). The British had their own little spots in and around the town. The Jalpaiguri Club, the Race Course (now defunct), the beautiful bungalows along the banks of the Teesta and the Karala and the defunct airport at Panga, close to the town, bear testimony to this fact. It is amazing how Jalpaiguri still retained most of its colonial character even fifty-plus years after independence. The core town possibly resembles more or less the same as it was during the end of the British rule. A walk along the Teesta beside the stately bungalows, built by the British, now housing the Government officials, would evoke the same feelings. A visit to the beautiful parks and gardens along the banks of the Karala gives peace to the strained city-dweller. This is colonial Bengal in all its glory.

Bikaner-The Camel City

Bikaner-The Camel City

HISTORY Bikaner’s history dates back to 1486 A.D. when Rao Jodhaji, the illustrious founder of Jodhpur challenged his son to establish his own kingdom. For Prince Rao Bikaji, one the five sons of Rao Jodhaji, the barren wilderness called Jangladesh became his focus point and he transformed it to an impressive city. He accomplished his task with 100 cavalry horses and 500 soldiers, and established his kingdom on 84 villages abandoned by the 'Shankhlas'. When Bikaji died in 1504 his rule had extended to over 3,000 villages. Modern Bikaner is the result of the foresight of its most eminent ruler Maharaja Ganga Singh (1887-1943) whose reformative zeal set the pace for Bikaner transformation from a principality to a premier princely state. The strategic location of Bikaner on the ancient caravan routes that came from West/Central Asia made it a prime trade centre in those times. Bikaner stands on a slightly raised ground and is circumscribed by a seven km long embattled wall with five gates. The magnificent forts and palaces, created with delicacy in reddish-pink sandstone, bear testimony to its rich historical and architectural legacy. Surging lanes, colourful bazaars with bright and cheerful folks make Bikaner an interesting experience to explore. CULTURE The convenience through the camel paved the way of all aspects of life for the people of Bikaner. From catering and fashion to traveling and entertainment, the camel is a day-to-day necessity. This is why Bikaner came to be known as the 'Camel Country'. Bikaner is famous for its "Bikaneri Bhujia" and its sweets and is also known for its handicrafts and leather articles, for its palaces and for having the biggest camel farm of Asia. The city is also known for its intricately carved Jharokas. These stone screens are found on the windows of forts and havellis - traditionally, women would use the screens to watch the world while remaining hidden. The red sandstone for these stone window screens is supplied by the nearby village of Dulmera. Bikaner is also a centre for Usta art. The work for the prosperity of the Usta art is being done in Bikaner for centuries. Usta art is characterised by miniature paintings and gold embossing done on, ceilings, pillars , walls, marble, wooden & Glass wares and ivory. But its real beauty and charm can be seen on the pieces of camel hide. The products of Usta art have been the acquaintance of Bikaner for centuries. SHOPPING Since Bikaner never fails to surprise you with unique items in its markets, the place may also be referred to as a shopper's paradise. The city's local markets offer some excellent opportunities to pick up products made from camel hide as well as wooden antiques, clothing, jewellery and various art objects. Carpets are especially popular, with locally woven wool used in their creation. Lacquer Bangles, beaded and sequined gorbandhs, cotton fabrics with sanganeri prints, Mojari (Bikaneri style), Kundan work, wooden antiques, Nokha Quilts (known for lightweight and good insulation) are also a must buy. Also try local sweets such as Bikaneri bhujia and sweetmeats. Major areas congenial for shopping are located around Kote Gate and Junagarh Fort. WHERE TO STAY The heritage hotels of Bikaner, which were royal palaces, havelis and forts earlier, are known for pampering their guests with royal treatment.
