The College came into existence on 7th January, 1959 at H.R.H.P.O.W. Institute of Engineering & Technology, Jorhat with the then Principal of the Institute, Sri H.N. Barua also as the Principal in-charge of Jorhat Engineering College. The College started functioning with admission of its first batch of students in Civil Engineering, on 10th October, 1960. With a glorious journey, the College currently offers AICTE recongnised B.E. courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science & Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. While the College has been offering three-year post graduate course leading to Master of Computer Application (M.C.A.) since 1987, AICTE approval has been received for offering M.E. course in Mechanical Engineering.

Al-Kabir Polytechnic (AKP) was founded in 1990 in the Steel City of Jamshedpur, the industrial heart of Jharkhand. It was born of the mission and the foresightedness of the people of the Trust and was nurtured by the selfless and dedicated efforts of the Founder and the Chairman of Kabir Welfare Trust Haji Abdul Hakim. It was a long cherished desire of the Kabir Welfare Trust to establish a Technical Institute to benefit the minority and other backward communities of the Chhotanagpur region as well as the rest of the nation. The idea was conceived and after much sweat and toil, K.W.T. achieved its goal and Al-Kabir Polytechnic was established in 1990. A dynamic, industrious and prudent principal, along with highly efficient and effective team of faculty members, leads the college. It is indeed a pleasure to admit that we have progressed rapidly to achieve the goal of imparting quality education to the students. In future Kabir Welfare Trust is aiming to start a degree engineering college.
