About IGMC:
Himachal Pradesh Medical College at Shimla (HPMC) was established in the year 1966 (at Snowdon which was the residence of Lord Kitchnar (1873-74) the erstwhile Commander-in Chief of British-Indian Army) with admissions of 50 students in the first batch (of MBBS). Indira Gandhi Medical College is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
Himachal Pradesh Medical College was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College (now popularly known as IGMC in abbreviated form) in 1984. Admission facility was increased to 65 in the year 1978. Now MBBS seats have been increased 65 to 100.
Over the years, the Medical College has grown to a stature of a modern & prestigious medical institution in the Country.
The college is having 33 departments equipped with latest machinery and equipments.
Several of its alumni are the faculty members in well known Medical Colleges in India and abroad. Multi-storied buildings at Snowdon, Kamla Nehru hospital together contribute 872 beds to IGMC.
2550 number of under- graduates (MBBS) has passed out from this Medical College till 2010.
The post Graduate courses (MD/MS/PG Dip) were started in 16 disciplines in the year 1981. So far 595 postgraduates and 270 in diploma courses have passed out from IGMC till date. More PG courses have been added from the session 2002-2005 in the specialties of Radiotherapy (Oncology) and Skin & VD.
Total number of PG Degree(MD/MS) seats are 74 and 13 in diploma courses. From 2011 the college is also admitting the students in the superspecialities. MCH students in CTVS department and DM in Cardiology department. It is one of the very few medical colleges in the Govt. sector which has excellent teaching, training and clinical facilities. The institute has full time non practicing dedicated faculty. Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla has also been granted the status of Regional Cancer Center by the Govt. of India, thus providing much needed comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patient.
