Rajahmundry is noted for its versatile Vedic culture and intellect. City Population is 443,903 (Census 2011)[2]..Its original name is Raja Mahendri or Raja Mahendravaram. It was the first capital of any known Telugu Kingdom. The Chalukya ruler Rajaraja Narendra ruled this city around 1022. The city has traces of 11th century fine palaces, and fort walls. However, new archeological evidence suggests that the city may have existed far before the Chalukyas. In the Middle Ages, it was called Raja Mahendra Varam. Later the name underwent various changes to Rajahmahendravaram, Rajahmahendramu, Rajamandramu and Rajahmundhri. It later became Rajahmundry during British rule. Rajahmahendrapuram - Its establishment: It is difficult to know the history of this city before Chalukya's. Basing on the few proofs gathered by the Historians, two theories exist about the origin of Rajahmundry. • According to the first theory, Rajahmundry was established by Ammaraja Vishnuvardhana, the first (919 - 934 AD). Some people believe in this theory as Vishnuvardhana had the title "Rajamahendra". His predecessor Ammaraja Vijayaditya, the second (945 - 970 AD) had Rajaraja Narendra (1022 - 1061 AD) had the same title "Rajamahendra". • According to the second Theory, Rajaraja Narendra established the city Rajahmahendrapuram. This theory was based on the statement "Rajamahendrapura sthatha RajarajaNarendra". (Kavyalankara Chudamani written by Pedanna). Both the theories didn't have any Archeological proofs. But the proofs in the recent excavations show that this city belongs to the reign even before Eastern Chalukya's. Rajahmundry Airport

Rajahmundry Airport

Rajahmundry Airport is located at Madhurapudi, 18 km North of Rajahmundry in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Besides commercial flights to Hyderabad, the air strip is extensively used by the helicopters of the ONGC and other government agencies for its offshore oil exploration operations.HistoryThe airport was constructed during the British era and is spread over an area of 366 acres. It was served by Vayudoot between 1985 and 1994 and by VIF Airways in 1995. The Andhra Pradesh government signed a MoU worth Rs. 23 crore with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in February 2007 for modernising the airport. Works on the new terminal building to accommodate 150 passengers and control tower were completed in 2011 at a cost of Rs 38 crore. The terminal was inaugurated on 16 May 2012. The AAI's plans to extend the existing runway from 1,749 metres to 3,000 metres to enable landing of aircraft like the Airbus A320 has met with resistance from local land-owners. Approximately 700 more acres would be needed for this expansion. Limited by runway length, airlines operate smaller 70 seat turbo-prop aircraft like the ATR-72 (Jet Airways)and the Q-400 (SpiceJet) into Rajahmundry. As of now, The government sanctioned about 80 crore rupees for its expansion.
