Government College Kasaragod

Government College Kasaragod

A rumour that spread in early 1957 about the establishment of a Government college in Kasaragod came as a pleasant surpr ise to the people and students of what was then a remote town. Soon, the college started functioning with the late V. Gopalan Nair as principal. It was the then Finance Minister, C. Achutha Menon, who inaugurated the college on August 1, 1957. The college, which was housed in a corner of a high school building on the banks of the Chandragiri river, had very few students. The then Chief Minister, E.M.S. Namboodiripad, and the Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University, John Mathai, visited the college in the same year. In 1960, it became a full-fledged first-grade college and in 1969, it was upgraded as a postgraduate institution. In 1961, it moved to its present location in Kunhimavu Katte, now `Vidhya Nagar' (city of learning), three km from the town. The college still has its due place on the State's education map, thanks to the confluence of different cultures and languages. But the college that made many strides and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1987 lags behind others in several aspects. It was established on the initiative of Joseph Mundassery, educationist, visionary politician, and literary critic of yesteryear. Prof. Mundassery, the then Minister for Education, laid the foundation stone of the new college campus on January 17, 1958. As a token of respect to its founder, the college celebrated his birth centenary in December 2003.
