St. Michaels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School (SMS) was started in 1865. SMS is a boys school. The classes are from LKG to plus 2, and consists of nearly 2000 students. Its situated on payyambalam beach road, Kannur. Its a catholic school, but admits students of all communities irrespective of cast and creed. A Brief History According to the tradition, St Michael’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School was started in the late 1850s as a Malayalam medium parish school attached to the Holy Trinity Church, Kannur. With the effort of the then parish priest Fr Martelli,OCD, the administration of the school was taken over by Christian Brothers in the year 1862. The Brothers introduced English into the school and put up a new building for the school in 1864 which was completed in the year 1865. Since we dont have any documentary evidence about the nature of the early parish school, we consider 1865 as the year of starting of St.Michael's school. The Christian Brothers continued the management of St. Michael’s parish school until 1887. With the departure of the Christian Brothers, the management of the school was taken over by the Jesuits when Fr Maffei SJ was the parish priest of Holy Trinity Church. Under the guidance and management of Jesuits, the school developed into a European middle school in 1907. In 1936 the school was raised to European High school and came under Anglo-Indian code. Owing to financial difficulties the school negotiated with the State Government and came under KER by a Govt. Order dated 01/11/1974. Because of lack of space and the disturbance from the nearby textile mill, the functioning of the school in the Burnacherry campus became difficult. In 1950-s steps were taken to shift the school to a more healthy and convenient location with better facilities. Accordingly Fr Gilbert M.Coelho S.J., the then Superior and Headmaster of St Michael’s purchased a plot near the military maidan in 1956 and put up a building which later came to be known as Coelho Building. The Fathers residing at Burnacherry used to teach in the school going up and down till the new residence was built near the new school in 1973. The present property of St Michael’s was purchased by different Jesuits during a period of 20 years starting from 1956. The construction of the present main block was completed in 1996 while Fr Xavier Veliyakam SJ was the Headmaster. A Mini Stadium was also constructed in 1994 with the help of PTA. It is worth mentioning that the management graciously donated a high yielding coconut plantation for the construction of this stadium. In 1997 Fr KC Philip SJ took charge as the Headmaster and the lamp was lit for another phase of growth and development of the school. In 1998 the construction of the Higher Secondary building started under the leadership of Fr KC PhilipSJ, the principal and Fr Philip Thayil SJ, the rector. The first higher secondary batch was started in the year 2000. The construction of the central block with stage on the ground floor and office on the first floor was also started in the same year. Fr Thomas Anthraper SJ took charge as the manager and superior in 2001 and the works of beautiful lawn, the majestic statue of St. Michael’s and the present Jesuit residence were completed during his time, adding glory and beauty to the school. Now the school has grown into a big institution with nearly 2000 students and 80 staff members. The school is progressing under the leadership of the present Principal Br. KT Jose SJ . He is entrusted with the herculian task of completing the multi-purpose, two storey auditorium. At present the school is equipped with all infrastructural facilities except an auditorium which is under construction. A very good atmosphere is prevailing in the school. Our teachers are competent and co-operative and they give leadership to different programmes, club activities, celebrations etc. The PTA has been very active since its inception in 1988. They were behind all the noble ventures of the school. Now they have geared their strength towards completing the auditorium. Our Alumni association is also functioning well. The present superior Fr John Francis SJ, Manager Fr Joseph Inchakkal SJ, Vice –Principal Fr Gracious SJ are serving the school in their own unique ways.

ORGANIZATION SET UP Government Ayurveda College, Kannur, Pariyaram is functioning under the aegis of the Director, Ayurveda Medical Education, Thiruvananthapuram which is under the H & FW Department, Government Secretariat, Thiruvananthapuram. Principal is the Head of the College. Government have created 84 posts for Government Ayurveda College, Pariyaram till 31/03/2011. The details are furnished below. INFRASTRUCTURE: Government Ayurveda College, Kannur, Pariyaram started functioning in its own building from 01/06/1998 for imparting classes to the BAMS Students. There were 5 batches of BAMS Students with intake capacity of 40 students each year. 2 PG courses in Roganidana & Kriya sareera were also being conducted with an intake capacity of 5 students in each discipline. The College has procured the required Furniture items, lab equipments, Chemicals, Charts, Models, library books etc for all the departments of the College. INTERNAL CONTROL MECHANISM : Government Ayurveda College, Kannur is functioning under the Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education and internal audit of accounts of College and Hospital were conducted annually by the Director of Ayurveda Medical Education, Thiruvananthapuram. Government Ayurveda College Kannur Hospital: A 100 bedded Government Ayurveda College Hospital, Kannur, Pariyaram has been started functioning from 01/06/1998 in the 'A' Block of the College building to give clinical training to the BAMS students as per the norms prescribed by CCIM, New Delhi. The functioning of the college hospital has been shifted to the newly constructed I.P. Block of the College hospital from 12/2004. The P.W.D. building division has handed over the newly constructed O.P. Block of the Hospital Building in 03/2010 and the functioning of the Administration of the Hospital have been shifted to the newly constituted O.P. Block from 01/06/2010 onwards. Government have enhanced the bed strength of Hospital from 100 beds to 150 beds from 08/2009 onwards. At present 13 clinical Departments are functioning in the Hospital of which 2 Departments namely Department of Roganidana and Kriyasareera are P.G. Departments. Government Ayurveda College Hospital, Kannur, Pariyaram is functioning under the Government Ayurveda College, Kannur, Pariyaram and Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education, Arogya Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram with Superintendent as the Head of the Office. Government have created 57 para medical posts and 11 ministerial posts for Government Ayurveda College Hospital, Kannur, Pariyaram. Mens Hostel: The Men’s Hostel of Government Ayurveda College, Pariyaram started the year 1998. The hostel building is one-storeyed and is situated at the college campus. The hostel has 15 double rooms for the inmates. Each room has facility to lodge 2 students. Separate Reading room, Computer room , TV room, Mess hall and Kitchen are available at the hostel.The mess hall has the capacity to hold 35 students at a time. The Hostel is governed by a Hostel union in which a Secretary and President along with other members controls the hostel and are elected for the duration of 1year.The inmates has also started a vegetable garden and a herbal garden. A well equipped computer room for their curricular activities are arranged upstairs. A ground other than the college ground is available for the physical strengthening of the hostel inmates. Ladies Hostel : Govt Ayurveda College was established in the year 1998,Ladies Hostel is situated to the left of the college , very adjacent to the college as well as hospital premises,Hostel has a 3 storeyed building and consists of 38 rooms with all basic facilities.computer Room, Lavish Mess Hall where 65 students can dine at a time, single dormitory equipped with beds for the 30 students, Spacious Courtyard and Varandha with beautiful /garden outside. Each of the Rooms Provides Individual Cots,Table , Chair and Shelfs for the 3 inmates with standard Electrical Facilities.Mess is Controlled by Students Themselves. Govt. Ayurveda College Library, Kannur: Kannur Govt Ayurveda College was established in the year of 1992 at Kannur; the functioning of the college was shifted to newly constructed building at Pariyaram with effect from 1.06.1998. College library was established for the information requirements of the academic community of the Govt. Ayurveda College Kannur. The functions of the library include the collection, organization and dissemination of information. The library is situated in the ground floor of the A Block College building with a 2600 square feet area; it has the seating capacity of 60 people at a time. Library has rich collection of books which related with ayurveda, modern medicine, general books such as Malayalam literature, and competitive examination books. Library has acquired ‘Book Magic’ Software package that supports all in housekeeping activities of the library.
