The Govt. Women�s Polytechnic College, Kalamassery was established in the year 1983 and was, and still is a pioneer institution imparting technical education to girls. Ideally located in the industrial belt of Eloor, between Ernakulam and Aluva, it has been instrumental in training many a skilled pass out who are currently employed in many prestigious institutions in and around the city. It is an institution that plays a remarkable role in empowering the women community of our state. At the time of its establishment it offered only two branches of study, Electronics Engineering and Commercial Practice, with 18 students each. Architecture was introduced in 1984 and Computer Engineering in 1999. The sprawling 3 acre campus has the college built in the modern style, with two indoor courtyards, one a garden and the other a shuttle badminton court. It stands for training both the mind and the body. While keeping in sight the aesthetics of life. The facilities include the Library, laboratories, workshop etc. The Government Polytechnic College, the LBS Centre for science and Technology, the Supervisory Development Centre, the Industrial Training Institute, the St. Paul�s College, CUSAT etc. are the major institutions in and around the institution.

Ernakulam Junction is the largest railway station in the city of Kochi. The station has six platforms and two terminals . It is a junction, joining lines going in four different directions namely: north towards Shornur, south towards Alappuzha, south-west towards Willingdon Island and east towards Kottayam. This station has 6 platforms to handle long distance trains and local trains.The station is operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. It is one of the major railway stations in Kerala with trains to any part of India and also one of the A1 graded stations in the Southern Railway. The Station also has a Train Care Centre in its premises.Another major railway station in downtown Kochi is the Ernakulam Town Railway Station. Besides this there are numerous railway stations in the Greater Cochin Region. Because of the loop structure of the tracks, trains going from the Thrissur side to the Kottayam side via Ernakulam Junction have to reverse their directions, whereas those going to the Alappuzha do not face this problem.

Government Law College, Ernakulam is a prominent institution for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate legal education in Kerala. It is situated in the heart of Kochi City. Founded in 1874, the college is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.HistoryThe history of Government Law College, Ernakulam goes back to 1874 when legal education set its root in Kerala by the Maharajah of Travancore sanctioning the Organisation of a Law Class in connection with His Highness College Thiruvanathapuram . This was with a view to enable candidates from Travancore to present themselves for the law examination of Madras University. Those law classes continued as such till 1894 when the institution was re organised entirely on a different footing. The college was raised to the status of an independent college under the designation of His Highness the Maharajah's Law College, Thiruvananthapuram with W.T.A. Cosby, bar-at-law as the first principal. A complete set of rules was formulated by the government for the control and regulation of work in the college. The rules prescribed the qualification prescribed for the members of the teaching staff.The college was maintained by the His Highness the Maharajah of Travancore from the very start and managed till 1909, in which year the college was placed under the Direction of the Public Instruction. In 1910, the college came under the High Court of Travancore. With the inauguration of the Travancore University in 1938, the college was transferred to the control of the university. In 1957 the Kerala University was formed and the college came under it. In 1983, with the establishment of Mahathma Gandhi University at Kottayam, the college became a constituent college of that university and is now affiliated to it.
