St. Peter's School, Durgapur
The heart of the ‘steel city’ of Durgapur is crowned with a gem of an educational institution, St. Peter's, the renowned. It’s the oldest privately held school in the city. The school was founded by Twelve European companies under the banner of ESCON [European Steel Consortium] in accordance with the resolution to provide education to children whose parents were employed with ESCON in Durgapur. In 1965, the school was handed over to the Methodist Church under Rev. Allen Stevens.
With the establishment of the Church of North India in 1970, the school was brought under the diocese pf Durgapur with the Bishop of Durgapur, C.N.I. as ex-officio chairman. The institution was then rechristened Benachity primary school & in 1987, was made into a high school.
Today, St. Peter's is a large, modern, well-equipped co-educational institution providing quality education to nearly 1800 youngsters from pre-nursery to class XII level. The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian school Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The symbol of the school is “piety, religion and purity” which is a sign of faithfulness and unity.
The academic record St. Peter's is extremely impressive. Recent records include two students scoring over 96% marks in the 2004 I.C.S.E. school final examinations. But what really sets apart St. Peter's students is their performance and enthusiasm in extra-curricular activities. Especially, in quizzing St. Peter's (formerly Benachity High) is the undisputed leader with her students winning numerous quiz contests over the years. The supremacy of St. Peterites is visible with the school crowned champion twice in the Inter I.C.S.E Cultural Fest, out of four times held. The ‘Fest’ is the largest cultural & competitive event celebrated yearly, involving students from I.C.S.E. schools of the city. Last year, our school organized the event successfully with brilliance and grandeur.
The school also celebrates many programs including ‘Teacher’s Day’, ‘Children’s Day’, annual sports, ‘Republic’ & ‘Independence day’, birth day celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore and the annual Christmas celebration which is the most entertaining and colorful school function in Durgapur city. The school recently celebrated it's golden jubilee with great vigour and celebrations.
With the leadership of Principal Mr. Daniel Thomas; hard work, passion and determination of our great teachers with whom pupils share a warm relationship, commitment of school staffs and last but not the least, students, St. Peter's is traveling the path towards glory.
