Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The Institute is entirely the brainchild of legendary and visionary academic and administrator, Late Professor Bidhu Bhusan Das, who was Director of Public Instruction, Odisha, at that time. Prof. Das had dreamed of a world class institute devoted to physics in Odisha owing to his cognizance of the large number of outstanding professors and scholars of physics from Odisha. Prof. Das set it up in 1972, supported by the Government of Odisha under the patronage of late Shri Banamali Patnaik, who was Odisha's education minister at that time, and it was Prof. Das who chose Dr. Trilochan Pradhan as its first director, when the Institute started theoretical research programs in the various branches of physics. Prof. Das tapped the talent and expertise - among others - of two internationally renowned physicists in the Institute's early days: Prof. T. P. Das, of SUNY, Albany, New York, USA and Prof. Jagdish Mohanty of IIT Kanpur and Australian National University, Canberra. In 1981 the Institute moved to its present campus near Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar. The Institute was taken over by the DAE on March 25, 1985 and started functioning as an autonomous body.

This school happens to be the oldest school in Bhubaneshwar established in the year 1940 is located at a distance of about 200 metres from the famous Lingaraja temple. Late Bansidhar Mangaraj is the founder of the school. From 1940 to 1958 this school was under private management and from 1958 to 1969 it received grants from the government and was hence a grants-in-aid school. From 1969 it became a government school.

About the Association - Old Boy’s Association, Sainik School, Bhubaneswar originated in the year 1970 – 71 when a group of enthusiastic obeeans decided to meet at least once a year in order to strengthen and continue the bondage among the alumni of the school. Lt. Col. S.S. Nakra and Hardman Singh were the first President and Secretary of the Orissa Boy’s Association respectively. OBA continued as a loose knit organization for nearly one and a half decade, holding successfully annual get together of the alumni in the month of December every year. However in1988, it was decided to give a formal status to the OBA with well defined goals and objectives. An extra ordinary General Body meeting was convened on 26th June 1988 at Vivekanda Hall, Sainik School, Bhubaneswar under the chairmanship of the Principal Lt. Col. M.P.S. Tyagi which took few concrete decisions.
