This is the largest affiliating university in the country with 267 affiliated general colleges, 15 law colleges, six medical and pharmacy colleges.HistoryAfter the separation of Odisha from Bihar and the creation of the new province of Odisha in April 1936, there was a strong desire among the leaders of the province for the establishment of a separate university in Odisha. Until 1936 all the colleges were under the jurisdiction of either Patna University or Andhra University. Subsequently the government of Odisha, with Shri Biswanath Das as the premier, appointed a committee on 2 March 1938 with Pandit Nilakantha Das as its chairman to examine the possibility of establishing a separate university in Odisha. During the premiership of Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, who played a pioneering role in the establishment of the university, the recommendation of this committee was made available. Pandit Godavarish Mishra, the then minister of education in the government of Odisha introduced the Utkal University Bill which was passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly on 30 June 1943. On receiving the Governor's assent subsequently on 2 August 1943, the Utkal University Act 1943 came into force, clearing the way for the foundation of the university on 27 November 1943.

Global warming is a serious challenge that we face today. Do you know that buying used books can reduce global warming and help you lessen your impact on the environment? We annually consume more than 2 billion books, 350 million magazines and 25 billion newspapers. Approximately 10 million tons of paper were used last year to produce them. That’s the equivalent of nearly 200 million trees! Together, books and newspaper emits the equivalent of nearly 34.5 million tons (or 6.3 million cars’ worth) of carbon dioxide every year. The paper industry is the largest consumer of forests in many countries. In southern US, it is currently logging an estimated 5 million acres of forests each year. We are all aware of the importance trees hold in our lives. Reusing old books is very important for saving trees and conserving our environment. Book Your BOOKS is a small step in this direction. Together, we can create a huge impact with this small initiative. Book Your BOOKS appeals to all of you to urge your friends and colleagues to reuse old books and help save the environment! source- google.com
