Edakkal Caves:
A pair of caves on top of the Ambukuthimala with historical importance. The New Stone Age pictorial writings on the walls of these natural caves at Edakkal are evidence of the civilisation that existed in these regions in prehistoric times. Symbols of human beings, animals and ancient tools are visible here.
Muthanga wild life sanctuary:
Wayanad wild life sanctuary is here. The sanctuary and park with ever flowering trees is a major tourist attraction. Muthanga and Tholpetty are ideal places to spot wild life.
Pookod Lake: This perennial fresh water lake, nestled among wooded hills, is the only one of its kind in Kerala. Boating facilities, a children's park, a handicrafts and spices emporium and a fresh water aquarium are among the tourist facilities available here.
Thirunelli Temple:
An ancient temple in the foot hills of the 5276 feet Brahmagiri Mountain. A journey through the forest gets you there. temple is a marvel of temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granites. Beyond the Brahmagiri Mountain is the Kudagu district of Karnataka.
Pakshipaathalam: Home to a large variety of rare species of birds, this place can be reached by trekking. Birds can be sighted from the watch tower of this bird sanctuary.
Lakkidi:
Gateway to Wayanad, Lakkidi is situated 700 m above sea level, at the crest of the Thamarasseri Ghat pass. Lofty peaks, gurgling streams and luxuriant forests add magic to the journey up the winding roads ti this hill station.
In addition to these, Wayanad offers a lot more. Wild life sanctuaries, bird sanctuaries, fulgurous waterfalls, tranquil lakes, lush greenery of the evergreen forests and the pristine nature unveils a visual spectacle to anyone visiting Wayanad.
Kuruva Island
The Kuruva islands are a group of three islands located in the middle of one of the tributaries of the east-flowing river Kabani. This 950 acre tract of uninhabited land is rich in flora and fauna. Rare species of birds, orchids and herbs can be seen here. It is a must see destination for nature lovers and a popular picnic spot.
Pakshipathalam:
Situated at an altitude of 1740m and accessible only by trekking, Pakshipathalam is home to several species of birds and is an ornithologists paradise. It is located in the Brahmagiri Hills near Thirunelly. There is a cave here, which according to legend was used by rishis (saints) in ancient times for meditation.
Banasura Dam:
he Banasura Dam is built across Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabini River, and is part of the Banasura Sagar Project aimed at supplementing the Kakkayam Hydro-electric project, and to provide drinking water and irrigation facilities to the region. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas make a pretty sight against the backdrop of the Banasura Hill. Boating is a favorite activity here.
Pookote Lake:
This is a natural fresh water lake nestling amid evergreen forests and mountain slopes at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level and having an area of 8.5ha. The Panamaram rivulet - one of the main tributaries of the Kabani River - originates from it. Lying 3km south of Vythiri town, the lake is one of the most popular tourist spots in Wayanad. Meenmutty Waterfalls:
Meenmutty Waterfalls is a spectacular fall that cascades from a height of about 300m in three stages. It is the second largest waterfall in Kerala. Located in the lush deciduous forest 29km south of Kalpetta, the falls can be reached only after a 2km trek. The Meenmutty, Soochipara, and Kanthanpara waterfalls combined, feed the Chaliyar river.
Soochipara:
Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, also known locally as Soochipara, is located at Vellarimala village in Meppadi panchayat. Like in Meenmutty, here too the water cascades down in three steps from a height of about 200m. This is a popular picnic spot and trekking area. The Sentinel Rock is also ideal for rock climbing.
Kanthanpara Waterfall:
Surrounded by bamboo forests, the Kanthanparra Waterfall is more noted for the breathtaking beauty of the path leading to it than for the fall itself. At 30m, the fall is relatively smaller than Meenmutty or Sentinel Rock Falls, and perhaps on that account it is less frequented. But its proximity to the main road and the beauty of the surroundings make it a popular picnic spot.
Chembra Peak:
At an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, this is the highest peak in Wayanad. A daylong trek takes you to the top from where you can have a panoramic view all around. En route to the summit is a small heart-shaped fresh water lake.
Pazhassi Tomb
The memorial of Pazhassi Raja known as the Lion of Kerala is an important heritage site. The tomb marks the point where the Raja was cremated. The monument and the underground museum were conceived and designed by Eugene Pandala.
