With nearly 2,000 churches and over 250,000 Christians in 29 Indian States, Burma, Nepal, People’s Baptist Ministries in India Society (previously known as Kerala Baptist Gospel Team) was founded in 1976. It is the Mission Board of People’s Baptist Church–– an independent, Baptist Church located in Trivandrum, India.
Ministry History
G.S. Nair was saved in a Baptist mid-missions hospital in 1972. He graduated from Berean Baptist Bible College, in Bangalore, India in 1977. While in college, G.S. and a group of students organized a prayer meeting in order to be sent by God. Later with the leadership of the Holy Spirit and only $5 in hand, he and 3 others went out to hold street meetings, give testimonies, hand out tracts, conduct Bible studies and do personal work.
The burden of seeing millions lost without the Lord Jesus Christ and the compassion of our Savior motivated them to forsake all and give their lives for the cause of Christ.
In 1980, as a ministry of his own church, he began the Peoples Baptist Bible College and Seminary (PBBC&S) in order to train nationals to establish churches throughout India and beyond. This training is necessary because India is closed to foreign missions.
Presently the college students have established 1985 Baptist churches with a total membership of over 250,000.
The College’s threefold mission is to:
• Win souls to Christ
• Establish churches
• Disciple new converts to reach others.
Sadly, every year the college must turn away committed students due to lack the funds needed to house and train them. Because most students are unable to pay for their own tuition and housing.
Bible Colleges, Seminary and Extension schools
People’s Baptist Ministries founded People’s Baptist Bible College and Seminary in 1980. The school has only one purpose: to train and motivate nationals in the word God to win souls, make disciples and mature the saints by planting churches thereby fulfilling the great commission of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Our success rate for putting pastors on the field over the past 33 years is over 88%. Of the 2,200+ graduates, over 1,980 are now in full time ministry in 27 Indian States, Nepal and Burma.
Extension Schools
We have 9 extension schools located in 9 different states and 1 in Nepal. We offer eight week courses over a two-year period. This is an effective way to train nationals to be in the ministry by means of a work-study program. Our extension school graduates are effectively working in villages and small towns planting churches.
Children’s Homes (Orphanages)
We have 19 Children’s homes in 8 different states of India and Myanmar (Burma):
In all, we serve 455 children.
We have already built and finished the tsunami home thanks to our Lord’s provision.
Now, we need to build three more homes. The need is great.
We want to build a home in Raipur, Chathiesgarah for children of whose parents were lepers.
Church Planting Ministry
It takes about 200 members and 5-7 years for an Indian pastor to become self-supporting. This is because there is such a high unemployment rate.
The world’s most unusual summer job:
Instead of going home for summer break, many of our students and faculty volunteer to become part of evangelistic teams that spread out all over India. This summer, we sent out over 27 Gospel teams into over 27 states plus Nepal and Myanmar.
The teams consisted of 7-12 students and one or more faculty members each. Here’s what they did:
• Door-to-door visitation inviting people to gospel meetings.
• Handed out tens of thousands of tracts & Gospel literature.
• Helped established churches.
• Held street meetings.
• Held Bible studies.
• Preached the gospel, sang and gave testimonies at evangelistic meetings.
• Dealt one-on-one with inquirers.
• Led people to the Lord.
• Held Gospel meetings in an effort to evangelize and plant new churches.
• Did follow-up work which ends up in home bible studies which then turn into new churches.
• Thousands trusted the Lord and were baptized.
Through this method, over 1,950 churches consisting of over 250,000 members have been established since 1976.
