The University of Calicut is an affiliating university located at Thenjipalam, Malappuram in the southern state of Kerala in India. The University has a number of off-campus centres in neighbouring districts especially Kozhikkode, Wayanadu, Thrissur, Palakkad and Lakshadweep islands and it conducts courses and examinations for the students of the affiliated colleges. The main campus in Thenjipalam has departments in most of the science and humanities areas. The departments offer post graduate courses and research programmes. However, the main business in the campus is administration and conduct of examinations for all the affiliated colleges which number above 250. In 2013 it is ranked as the 26th best university of India.HistoryCalicut University was established in 1968 and was administered by Dr. M.M Ghani in the 1970s. The University had especially strong faculty in Physics, Zoology, Chemistry, Botany, History, Malayalam, English and Physical Education. The Campus locales spread over around 500 acres (2.0 km2) in rural outskirt of Malappuram, had the feel of a hill station. This school, which had its origin in 1958 as a management school, was later adopted by the Kerala Government and now functioning as a Government school. This school was one of the two schools permitted in the academic year 1958 -59 by the then Education Minister, Sri. Joseph Mundasheri. In 1957, initial activities of the school were started in the residence of Sri Puthanpurakkal Raman. This school got its recognition only when it was upgraded to single division UP school on 1 July 1958. This school started functioning its UP Section in a two-room construction in the present SNSALP School, which is 1.5 km away from the location where this school is presently situated. When Late Sri Puthanpurakkal Raman constructed and donated the class rooms, the school started functioning at the present location. In 1959 – 60 when VII, VIII, and IX classes were also permitted, U.P. School, Kizhuppillikara, changed to Nalanda High School, Kizhuppillikara. The functioning of the school was under the control of the Management of the school committee. In this there were 19 members. The Executive Committee which comprises 6 members included Sri. P.M. Ramankutty, who was the President, and Sri. T. Balakrishna Menon, who was the Secretary. Besides, there was Vidwan P. Sankaran, Sri. K. Esan, Sri. K.V. Govindankutty and Sri. N.K. Kunjumarikkar as members. The functioning of the school was carried out with the donations received from generous people. The major portion of the land, where the school exists, was donated by S N D P Yogam and the rest bought by the management. Now, the school has more than 3 acres of land of its own. In 1990, the then existing management entrusted the authority to the staff management. After this, it took initiative to handover the school to the Government. In 1995, this school was adopted by the Government. With this, the amenities of the school started to raise in bounty. In 2000, this school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School. The SSLC results also improved. For the past 5 years, Government Nalanda Higher Secondary School earned reputation as the only government school in Thrissur District which has cent percent pass. It is not out of place to mention here that this is the only school in Thrissur district which scored cent percent pass in the category of schools with strength of more than 50 students for SSLC examination in the academic year 2007 – 08. The specialties of the school is that there are well – equipped science , computer laboratories, libraries, CD Library, for high school and higher secondary school and a vast Multimedia hall as per the Edusat Scheme.

Maharaja’s technological Institute is the oldest Polytechnic in Kerala State. Located in the heart of Thrissur, the polytechnic evolved from a war technicians training centre this was established by the Govt. of India during World War II. In 1946, this training centre was named as Maharaja’s Technological Institute and diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering were started in 1947-48. When the Directorate of Technical Education was formed under Govt. of Kerala, the Institution came under the administrative control of the Directorate. Maharaja’s Technological Institute is a premier technical education center I Kerala targeting the rural people. Even though, the institution is located in the heart of Thrissur town, it is surrounded by a number of villages. This institution serves as Nodal Polytechnic for the Thrissur District in which there are seven other polytechnics. The college has hostel facilities for men which attracts students from distant rural locations.

School of Drama established in 1977, is a foremost institution in India giving academic training in the practical and theoretical aspects of Drama and Theatre, which has created a ‘new wave’ in the Theatre outlook of Kerala. In 2000 December Music Department started functioning and offering Master of Arts in Music, Ph.D., in Music. The students get an opportunity to understand the glorious history of theatre and different schools of thought. The curriculum exposes to the creative aspects of performing arts like playwriting, acting, directing, design technology etc. Our classical and folk traditions are being taught along with the present global trends in contemporary world theatre. As theatre assimilates all other art forms, the course is designed encompassing allied art forms like yoga, martial arts, cinema and television. Experts in different fields of art are invited from all around the world to give lectures. Play productions and short film productions are regularly directed by faculty, guest directors and also by students of each semester. School conducts seminars and workshop in collaboration with abroad Universities, National school of drama and other cultural bodies. The School of Drama troupe visited Japan in Feb. 2001 and presented the play ‘Saketham’ based on the Ramayana in Tokyo and Fukuoka, we have also participated in several National and International Theatre Festivals. We had Exchange Program with St. Martin’s College,London in the academic year 2005-2006. Alumni of our school are working in the field of drama, films and mass media, Universities in India and abroad and also in Government cultural bodies .
