This College was inaugurated by Ex-Chief Minister, late Biju Pattnaik on 16th August, 1961. Credit goes to Steel Authority of India LTD. (SAIL) for the initial development of the college. It was shifted to its present building at Panposh on 16th April, 1980. The college was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002. In the year 2002 the college was also accredited with Grade- B by NAAC. The College offers Arts, Science and Commerce at Higher Secondary and degree levels.The college also offers M.A. in English, Odia and M.Sc. in Botany. The college also offers a variety of Self Financing Degree Courses in Computer Science, Electronics and Tele Communication, Mathematics with Computer, PGDCA, PGDCH & NET and Master Degree in Computer Science. The college has also provided facilities for IGNOU Learners Centre.As per the circular of the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Odisha, the college now stands bifurcated into the Government Junior College, Rourkela for +2 stream and Government Autonomous College, Rourkela for +3 Stream and P.G. with effect from the academic session, 2001-02.
