The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act. The university has 15 academic departments, and focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences. BITS has campuses in Pilani, Goa (BITS Pilani Goa Campus), Hyderabad (BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus), Dubai (BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus) and an extension center in Bangalore. Although the campuses are primarily autonomous, the same degrees are awarded at all campuses by the university. BITS was the first Indian educational institution to establish a campus abroad.The institute was established in its present form in 1964, with a vision of realising Jawaharlal Nehru’s project of nation-building and an emphasis on "science, technology and modernization". During this period, the institute's transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by G.D. Birla. Massachusetts Institute of Technology provided the technical assistance required by the change.BITS administers the all-India computerised competitive entrance examination, BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), the first of its kind in the country. Based on the number of applications received, 136,000 students were expected to take BITSAT-2012 for 4,000 seats at the institute (68 students per seat). Its acceptance rate was less than 2.94% in 2012, making it India's most selective university. Admission is merit-based, as assessed by the BITSAT examination. The fully residential institute is privately supported.

The establishment of the Birla Museum in the year 1954 at Pilani – a university town in Rajasthan known for technical education and situated about 200 km west of Delhi-marked the birth of the first museum of industry & technology in the country. It was then, as it is now, the only technological museum situated in a university campus in India .

At that time, its transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by the Ford Foundation and G.D.Birla. MIT provided the technical assistance that was required for this transformation. The institute has developed and administers the all-India computerized entrance test BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), which is the first of its kind in India. Acceptance rate in BITS is very low, less than 2.08% in 2007, making it one of the most selective universities in India. The admission is on the basis of merit (as assessed by the BITSAT Examination) and not through any kind of reservation. The institute is privately supported and fully residential. The institute has strong linkages with industry, as can be seen by its off-campus Work Integrated Learning Program(WILP) which enrolled 19,000 students from corporate enterprises in 2009. Practical experience in the industry is in the curriculum as a "Practice School" program, where students work with companies throughout India. BITS has campuses in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Goa, India, Hyderabad, India and an extension center in Bangalore, India. Although the campuses are autonomous for the most part, the right to grant degrees rests with the main campus. It is the first Indian institution to set up a campus outside India.
