Aleph Book Company is an independent Indian publishing firm, which publishes books of enduring literary quality by South Asian writers (or books about South Asia). The hallmarks of the fiction and non-fiction that Aleph publishes are originality, style, substance, readability, and that ineffable quality that separates the merely competent from the good and the great. The authors the firm publishes run the gamut from debut or unheralded writers at the cutting edge of fiction and non-fiction to well established names who are emblematic of literary excellence in India and throughout the world.
In the course of their careers, the publishers of Aleph Book Company, David Davidar and Ravi Singh, have edited or published dozens of renowned novelists and non-fiction writers including Khushwant Singh, Vikram Seth, Shashi Tharoor, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai, Musharraf Ali Farooqi, Rohinton Mistry, Vikram Chandra, Valmik Thapar, R. K. Narayan, Ruskin Bond, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Dom Moraes, Pico Iyer, Pranay Gupte, Sudhir Kakar, Maria Couto, Jerry Pinto, Manjushree Thapa, Namita Gokhale, Devdutt Pattanaik, Gurcharan Das, Mark Tully, Pavan Varma, Wendy Doniger, Romila Thapar, Shashi Deshpande and Nilanjana Roy, many of whom publish with Aleph.
Aleph Book Company was established in May 2011 as a joint venture between David Davidar and Rupa Publications India, one of India's oldest and largest publishing and distribution companies. Aleph publishes approximately 40-45 new titles a year.
