A school that can boast of Rishi Rajnarayan Basu as Headmaster; author of the Indian National Song, "Bandemataram", Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Sahid Kshudiram Bose as students hardly need introduction. We, Bengalees proverbially are an "atmabisrita" race. We fail to understand even this great Institution of national importance so long remained unsung, less-heard of and pathetically uncared for. Though a little belatedly the West Bengal Heritage Commission through its Notification u/s 9(1) of the West Bengal Heritage Commission Act 2001 declared Rishi Rajnarayan Smriti Bhawan of the Collegiate School Building as a Heritage Building on 16.09.2006 and this state Govt. recognition somewhat corrected our guilt. Founded as early as in 1834 when it was still darkness almost all over india, Midnapore Collegiate School has had since then a sterling track record not only in academic and related fields but also has had to her credit a unique and sustained contribution to our national struggle for independence.

Vidyasagar University, named after one of the most illustrious sons of Bengal as well as one of the doyens of Indian Renaissance, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, has grown out of a long cultural and educational movement in West Bengal in general and in the undivided district of Midnapore in particular.

Midnapore Collegiate School established in 1834, is one of the oldest schools in Bengal as well as India. The students and teachers of this school made contributions in Indian Freedom Movement during the British Rule. The environment here is very much conducive to academic excellence. Khudiram Bose, a martyr in the freedom struggle was one of the notable student of this school. Some other eloquent alumni of this institution are Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Manik Bandopadhyay. Famous Brahmo Samaj leader Wrishi Rajnarayan Basu as head masters had also contributed in building up the tradition of the institution. Also with the pace of time, it modified itself to much higher level, again on current situation every year school shows tremendous result not only in board exams also in every competitive exams also,Among the schools in west bengal it holds a prominent position as a reputated institution for its infrastructures, students and teachers qualitywise. Midnapore College established in 1873 is one of the oldest and most renowned of all the co-educational under graduate colleges of the district of Midnapore with a total student population of about 2900 situated on nearly six acres broad lawns ringed by old style and new buildings in the Eastern and old section of Midnapore Town. The college became a First Grade Degree Science college (affiliated to Calcutta University) in 1924. Honours affiliation in Physics was obtained in 1926 and Morning Section was opened in 1967. The affiliation of the college with Calcutta University was shifted to that with Vidyasagar University on 1st June, 1985. Physics Department of our college puts a remarkable signature as a premier department for long under Calcutta University and now under Vidyasagar University.
