The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is a public engineering, management and law institution established by the government of India in 1951. The first of the IITs to be established, it is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India.The institute was established to train scientists and engineers after India attained independence in 1947. It shares its organisational structure and undergraduate admission process with sister IITs. The students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur are informally referred to as KGPians. Among all IITs, IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus , the most departments, and the highest student enrolment. IIT Kharagpur is known for its festivals: Spring Fest , Kshitij and Shaurya .HistoryWith the help of Bidhan Chandra Roy (chief minister of West Bengal), Indian educationalists Humayun Kabir and Jogendra Singh formed a committee in 1946 to consider the creation of higher technical institutions "for post-war industrial development of India." This was followed by the creation of a 22-member committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar. In its interim report, the Sarkar Committee recommended the establishment of higher technical institutions in India, along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with affiliated secondary institutions. The report urged that work should start with the speedy establishment of major institutions in the four quarters of the country with the ones in the east and the west to be set up immediately.

Agricultural engineering is the branch of engineering that applies knowledge of biological science engineering science & technology to agricultural production and processing. Agricultural engineering combines the disciplines of mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical engineering with animal and plant biology. Basically there are four major specializations in agricultural engineering namely, farm machinery & power engineering, irrigation & drainage engineering soil & water Conservation engineering, post harvest process & food engineering. Each has its unique and wide scope for research work. Agricultural engineering has been accepted as one of the major disciplines which contribute significantly in increasing the productivity of agriculture in the country by way of increasing efficiency of inputs, conservation of resources and reducing post harvest losses besides value addition of agro-produce. Farm Machinery & Power Engineering: This specialization includes technology for appropriate mechanization, covered cultivation, reducing drudgery in farm operations, improving quality of farm produce and reducing cost of production, manufacturing technology, quality and standardization, animate and mechanical power sources, bio-fuels, renewable energy, energy application and conservation, energy efficient appliances and equipment, testing and evaluation, machinery management, safety and health hazards and man-machine-power interaction. Irrigation and Drainage Engineering: This specialization deals with technology for water resources development, water lifting, conveyance and utilization, conservation, controlled precision application of water through drip and micro-sprinkler, prevention of accumulation of excess water, flood control, reclamation of water logged soil using surface and sub-surface drainage. Soil & Water Conservation Engineering: This specialization deals with technology for land development, hydrology of natural precipitation, watershed development, accumulation and conservation of water, prevention of soil erosion from water and wind. Post Harvest and Process Engineering: It is also known as Food process engineering at various institutions. This specialization includes technology for post harvest, primary processing and value addition of food, feed, fiber and industrial crops, fermentation technology, controlled atmospheric packaging and low temperature storage. In addition to these, specializations are also offered in Aquacultural Engineering, Dairy and Food Engineering, Post Harvest Engineering, Agricultural Systems Management, ect.

The Autonomous Ground Vehicle Research Group (AGV), IIT Kharagpur, is a group of highly motivated students of diverse academic backgrounds motivated by a common spirit to develop India’s first Self-Driving Vehicle. Students from various disciplines of Engineering including Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science with a common interest in the Research Field of Robotics have collaborated to develop a marvel in the realm of Artificial Intelligence Research in India. We are a group of about 30 undergraduate students working towards the development of an Autonomous Car under the mentorship of our Faculty Advisor - Professor Debashish Chakraborty and his Phd Student - Mr. Dibyendu Ghosh. The Department of Physics and Meteorology, IIT Kharagpur has been around since the birth of the Insitute in 1951. Over the years, it has grown into a full--fledged Department with numerous academic and research activities. The Department is primarily housed in the central part of the Institute Main building occupying three floors. The Departmental personnel includes 29 faculty members, 25 technical and supporting staff, 58 research scholars and around 130 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Civil Engineering Society is a non-profit organisation under the Department of Civil Engineering,IIT Kharagpur.Its members include the undergraduate students, postgraduate students, faculty and research scientists. It is one of the most active civil engineering organisations in the country.It provides an excellent platform, particularly to the student members, to face the challenges of the profession efficiently through the different events conducted by the society.Apart from knowledge based events, it also conducts sports events, educational trips etc.

The Electrical Engineering Society is the official student representative body under the Department of Electrical Engineering, acting as a link between the Department activities and the students.
