The college is located at the headquarters of Keonjhar district in northern part of state of Odisha. The region around college has extensive forests, mountains, streams and falls. To be specific, the celebrated Gandhamardhan mountain range, described in the epic, Ramayana as unique source of herbal medicines and Sitabinj, the Ajanta of Odisha and the mountain Gonasika, allowing the sacred river Baitarani to stream out, lie nearby. The institution aims at extending higher education as a premier institution in northern Odisha and contributes to study and research in the local languages and culture and exploration and utilization of vast natural resources, of forests and minerals of the rich region. The college was established, due to the noble efforts of the local elites and the unflinching support of the district administration in 1957 as an intermediate science college.
