Makhan Singh ([July 1, 1937 – January 21, 2002)[1] was an Indian athlete during the 1960s. He was born in Bathulla village in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. His primary claim to fame came as a result of his victory over Milkha Singh in the 1962 National Games in Calcutta. He won a number of gold medals in National Games, and represented India in the 1962 Asian Games. Career His first taste of success was a bronze in the National Games in Cuttack in 1959. He then hit the high spots with the National Games in Delhi the following year when he won a gold in the short sprint and a silver in the 300 metres. He was to continue with this success in subsequent National Games, winning a gold and a silver at Madras in 1960, 4 Gold at Jabalpur in 1962 and 2 Gold and one Silver at Trivandrurn in 1963. But his greatest triumph was the 1962 National Games in Calcutta where, apart from scoring a sensational win over Milkha, he picked up four Gold Medals. He represented India in the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta where he won a relay gold in 4 x 400 metres and a Silver in the 400 metres. For Makhan Singh, the artillery gunner, the National Games had Special significance. He took part in all the Games from 1959 to 1964 and won a total of 12 gold, three silver and one bronze, the last one in Calcutta where he signed off being his most outing.[2][dead link] He was a Subedar in the Indian Army and retired in 1972. He later met with an accident, losing a leg. He died in penury in 2002.[

It came into being in 1927 as an Intermediate College with Shri Bihari Lal Bhatia as Founder Principal. Before partition itself, in 1943 it was upgraded to a Degree College in view of the great demand as erstwhile Kangra district and present day Una district of Himachal Pradesh were also among the areas covered by its academic facilities. This premier educational institution of Punjab has a proud history and a glorious past as it served as the seat of Teaching Departments of the Panjab University from 1948 till 1960 when the University was shifted from Lahore. During that period it was known as University College, Hoshiarpur. Eminent Scholars like Dr. Vishwa Nath, Dr. K.K. Dewett, Principal S.S. Chawla headed the institution while academic giants like Dr. R.C. Paul, Dr. Manmohan Singh ( Prime Minister of India), Dr. B.S. Minhas were on its faculty. This nursery of talent in academics, sports and culture has always stood up to its 80 year old traditions and aims at contributing its best towards the education of the population of the sub-mountainous region, better known as Kandi Area of Punjab. At present having a faculty of 95 teachers, the college imparts instruction in 8 Post-graduate and 7 Honours School courses. Besides this, it offers Under-graduate Courses in Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocational subject of Functional English. Since its inception, this college has been providing access to higher education to a predominantly rural/agrarian population, equipping them with skills that have enabled countless alumni who hold/have held the highest positions and honours in every walk of life. The number would run into scores. Poets like Sahir Hoshiarpuri, Muneer Niyaazi and Prem Kumar Nazar had been students here while Dr. Jagtar and Suresh Seth had been teachers. Munger adopted Swami Sarvanand Giri Maharaj as his guru. Bhai Bachittar Singh, born on 6 May 1664 at Padhiana was the second son of Bhai Mani Ram, a Minhas Rajput and devotee of the Sikh Gurus. One of the five brothers presented by their father for service to Guru Gobind Singh, he joined the order of the Khalsa on the historic Baisakhi day, 14 April 1699, and shot into prominence during the first battle of Anandpur against the hill chieftains, when, on 1 September 1700, he was selected by Guru Gobind Singh to single-handedly face a drunken elephant brought forth by the enemy to batter down the gate of Lohgarh Fort.
