Welcome to Dharwad

15°21′42″N 75°05′06″E , Dharwad ,
Dharwad, also known as Dharwar, is a city and a district in India's Karnataka state. Dharwad is the administrative seat of the Dharwad District. The municipality of Hubli-Dharwad (resulting from a merger in 1961 with its twin city Hubli, 22 kilometers away) covers an area of 200.23 km². Dharwad is located 425 km northwest of Bangalore, on National Highway 4, the main highway between Bangalore and Pune in Maharashtra. The climate is mildly hot during the summer (April-May), and pleasant during rest of the year, as it is at an altitude of about 750m, plus still has a lot of greenery round. The twin cities have a history behind them dating back to the Hoysala period. Dharwad is famous for its contributions to Indian culture, most notably to classical music and literature, and prestigious educational institutions, such as the Karnataka University. The Dharwad pedha - a milk-based sweetmeat - from this town is very popular. Today, Dharwad is well known as a quiet and pleasant city popular with students and pensioners. It continues to grow, with industries dotting both its northern and southern boundaries. In the years ahead, it promises to be a beehive of commercial activity. The location of the city on the NH4 makes it equidistant from 2 of the most industrialised centers in the country - Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, and Pune the 2nd most industrialised city in Maharashtra.Dharwad is situated on the edge of Western Ghats and hence is a hilly town. Spread over seven small hills at an average altitude of 750 meters above sea level, the city enjoys a salubrious climate amidst thick vegetation. Years ago, Dharwad was known for its lakes but several have now dried out. The lakes that still exist are Sadhankeri, Kelgeri (a man made lake created during British rule, almost 100 years old), Navalur, Hosayallapur and Nuggikeri. The city still has a few more small lakes left, in spite of rapid urbanization. Dharwad sits at the cusp of two distinct geographical divisions - Malenaadu (hilly, forest land with red soil) and Belavalanaadu (Deccan plains with black soil). Dharwad has plenty of green cover. Karnatak University's Botanical Garden is a sanctuary for many rare plants, trees and birds. Kelgeri, Sadhanakeri, Navalur and Nuggikeri are also homes for water birds.Dharwad is known as Chhota Mahabaleshwar due to its excellent climate throughout the year.[citation needed] Summers are mildly hot with occasional thunderstorms, lasting from late February to early June. They are followed by the monsoon season, with moderate temperatures and a large amount of precipitation. Temperatures are fairly moderate from late October to early February, with virtually no rainfall.

Karnataka Arts & Commerce College, Dharwad.

It is the Karnataka Arts College, in 'T' shape and in two storey's. 20 June 1917 marks a land-mark in the history and geography of Dharwad. It was on this blessed day that the Karnataka Arts College was founded. The long-felt dire need for higher education in this part of the old Bombay Presidency was fulfilled by the unswerving efforts of the late Diwan Bahadur Rodda Shreenivasarao and the late Rao Bahadur R.C. Artal, the fondest founders of this mighty institution. Initially housed at the Government Training College for Men. as an Intermediate College, it came to be upgraded as a First Grade College and was shifted to the present imperially majestic building in 1920. " Fresh as a morning rose newly washed with dew" the college began to bloom with the introduction of Science subjects and Honors courses. Hats off to Sri. Siddappa Kambli who strengthened the Science-Wing by equipping it with apparatus and other requisite facilities. With the linguistic re-organization of States in 1956 the College came under the control of the Mysore Government (Karnataka Government). The Karnataka University took over the College for running it as a model College in 1958, bifurcating it for administrative purposes into the Karnataka Arts College and the Karnataka Science College, different only in name but one in spirit, like the Indian bird "Gandabherunda' with two faces but one soul. The College began to flourish further with the introduction of new courses like Commerce, Music, Linguistics, Criminology, Yoga and so on. It started growing by leaps and bounds securing several ranks, many a time, nine out of ten at the examinations of the Karnatak University, P.U.E. Board and other public examinations. It has been winning prizes, general championships, individual championships, shields and certificates of merit at cultural meets and other competitions. It has won laurels in sports, games and matches held at different places all over the country from time to time. The College has been proudly felicitating the budding and triumphant talents. The proud products of the College include such alumni as Dr. P. B. Gajendragadkar, Ex-Chief Justice of India, Padmabhushan Wrangler Dr. D.C. Pawate, Ex-Vice Chancellor of the Karnataka University and Ex-Governor of Punjab: Padmashree Dr. V.K .Gokak, a distinguished Oxford University Scholar and a Jnanapeetha –awarded : Justice T.K.
