In the year 1958, Lt. SURAJMAL CHOUDHURY a young dynamic man from a small town in Rajasthan came to the DARJEELING HILLS. He was young but had a passion, a passion to do something new, to do something big. During those days DARJEELING was a dense jungle with TEA ESTATES all around. The made teas from the gardens were transported to Kolkata through trains as the road transport was not developed. There were ‘SIDINGS’ in various places where the made teas were brought in horse backs and tractors, they were then loaded in the TOY TRAINS which carried them to Siliguri and then they were loaded into broad gage trains and sent to Kolkata. Mr. Surajmal Choudhury started a company S. M. CHOUDHURY & SONS in the year 1961 and started the handling of made teas of MAKAIBARI TEA ESTATE in Kurseong. Gradually by the year 1967, S. M. Choudhury & Sons were the handling agents of most of the leading Tea Gardens in the Darjeeling Hills, having their own fleet of trucks to cater the needs of the Tea Gardens. By the year 1975 S. M. Choudhury & Sons became a specialized company in serving the Tea Gardens in the Darjeeling Valley by supplying them all inputs required to make the finest cup of the HIMALAYAN CHAMPAGNE.
