Badlapur was a travel route from Konkan to Gujarat, via Surat. The town was famous for its rich horse breeds. Warriors of "Shivaji Maharaj" used to change their horses here in anticipation of the difficult climbing through the Konkan area. The word ‘Badla’ (Marathi word for “to change”) was linked to the town. For the first time in 1971, Badlapur was recognised as a municipal town in the Ulhasnagar Tehasil.
