On 26th February 2011, Ahmedabad completed six centuries. While it is all set to become India’s first Heritage City, Akar Unlimited – an organization focused on bringing out Special Interest Publications, launched a Photo Competition - Ahmedabad Archives with the theme - Living Heritage of Ahmedabad.
The reason behind selecting this theme was to document the rich heritage that this 600 year old city has and also to encourage people to preserve and spread awareness about it. The idea was to capture the various moods and facets of the Ahmedabad and its heritage, through the lens’ eye - to have candid images of the people, the places, the past and the peculiarities of Ahmedabad - to have snapshots of the living heritage of Ahmedabad. Through this competition, the contestants are expected to capture new mood and virgin angles of old locale and present ‘old’ Ahmedabad with a ‘new’ view, which is candid and splendid!
The Jury of the competition includes eminent designers & photographers of Ahmedabad - Subrata Bhowmick, Parmanand Dalwadi, Deepak John Mathew & Vivek Desai.
Through this initiative, Akar Unlimited wants to provide a platform to amateurs, budding photographers and even professionals to come forward and document the city’s heritage through their lens and their perspective.
The three most promising photographs are awarded cash prizes of Rs. 25,000; Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 from the organizers – Akar Unlimited. Besides this, the Jury also selects three runners-up in each edition of the competition who are awarded Certificate of Merit during the Award Ceremony at the hands of the Jury members themselves.
So far, Akar Unlimited has successfully completed two editions of the competition and exhibitions of both the editions have also been organized.
