भारतीय स्वाधीनता से पहले कुमाऊं के शेष भाग की तरह लोहाघाट भी कई रजवाड़े वंशों द्वारा शासित रहा है। 6ठी सदी से पहले यहां कुनिनदों ने शासन किया। उसके बाद खासों तथा नंदों एवं मौर्यों का शासन हुआ। माना जाता है कि बिंदुसार के शासन काल में खासों ने विद्रोह कर दिया था जिसे उसके पुत्र सम्राट अशोक ने दबाया। इस काल में कुमाऊं में कई छोटे-मोटे सरदारों तथा राजाओं का शासन था। यह 6ठी से 12वीं सदी के दौरान संभव हो पाया कि एक वंश शक्तिशाली बना और इस समय अधिकांश समय यहां कत्यूरियों का शासन रहा।परंतु इस दौरान भी चंद शासकों ने चंपावत पर अपना नियंत्रण कायम कर लिया। उस समय चंपावत के निकट होने के कारण लोहाघाट एक महत्वपूर्ण सांस्कृतिक केंद्र था।12वीं सदी में चंद वंश को प्रधानता मिली, जब उन्होंने अपना अधिकार विस्तृत कर अधिकांश कुमाऊं पर शासन किया और वर्ष 1790 तक शासन करते रहे। अपनी स्थिति सुदृढ़ करने के लिये उन्होंने कई छोटे-मोटे प्रमुखों को पराजित किया तथा पड़ोसी राज्यों से युद्ध भी किया। इस वंश के शासन काल में एकमात्र विराम तब आया जब गढ़वाल के पंवार राजा प्रद्युम्न शाह, कुमाऊं का राजा बना यहां जो प्रद्युम्न चंद के नाम से जाना लगा। वर्ष 1790 में स्थानीय रूप से गोरखियोल कहे जाने वाले गोरखों ने कुमाऊं पर कब्जा कर लिया और चंदों के शासन का अंत कर दिया। वास्तव में प्रथम गोरखा आक्रमण लोहाघाट पर ही हुआ।गोरखों का शोषण भरा शासन वर्ष 1815 में समाप्त हो गया जब ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी ने उन्हें परास्त कर कुमाऊं पर अधिकार कर लिया। द हिमालयन गजेटियर (वॉल्युम III, भाग I, वर्ष 1882) में ई टी एटकिंस ने लिखा है कि वर्ष 1881 में लोहाघाट की आबादी 64 महिलाओं सहित कुल 154 ही थी। वह यह भी बताता है कि लोहाघाट सैनिकों की छावनी भी रहा था पर उसे पहुंच, की समस्या के कारण हटा दिया गया।तिब्बत के प्राचीन व्यापारिक मार्ग पर होने के कारण लोहाघाट का प्रमुख व्यापारिक शहर होना सुनिश्चित हुआ। तिब्बत से भारत, पहाड़ी रास्तों को पार करने में निपुण भोटिया लोग प्रमुख व्यापारी थे जो लोहाघाट के बाजार में ऊन भेड़/बकरी, बोरेक्स एवं नमक बेचने के लिये आते तथा तिब्बत के लिये मोटे कपड़े, चीनी (खासकर गुड़) मसाले एवं तंबाकू खरीदकर ले जाते। वर्ष 1962 के भारत-चीन युद्ध के कारण यह व्यापारिक कार्य एकाएक ठप्प पड़ गया और फलस्वरूप दोनों देशों के बीच व्यापारिक दृष्टि से लोहाघाट का महत्व कम हो गया।लोहाघाट का इतिहास स्वामी विवेकानंद से भी संबद्घ है, जिन्हें पास ही मायावती में एक अद्वैत आश्रम की स्थापना करने का श्रेय जाता है। यहां वे कई बार आये तथा वर्ष 1901 में दो सप्ताह से अधिक दिनों तक रूके। उन्होंने इस क्षेत्र के बारे में कहा, “यही वह जगह है, जिसका सपना मैं बचपन से देखा करता था। मैने बार-बार सदैव यहां रहने का प्रयास किया पर इसके लिये उपयुक्त समय नहीं मिल सका तथा कार्य व्यस्तता के कारण मुझे इस धार्मिक स्थान से दूर जाना पड़ा। मैं अंतर्मन से प्रार्थना एवं आशा करता हूं और विश्वस्त भी हूं कि मेरे अंतिम दिन यही बीतेंगे। पृथ्वी के सभी स्थानों में हमारी जाति की सर्वोत्तम यादें इन्हीं पर्वतों से संबद्ध हैं।”अंग्रेजों के औपनिवेशिक शासन से भारत के स्वाधीन होने पर कुमाऊं, उत्तर प्रदेश का एक भाग बना। वर्ष 1972 में अल्मोड़ा जिला का चंपावत तहसील पिथौरागढ़ में शासन किया गया तथा सितंबर 15, 1997 को चंपावत जिला को स्वतंत्र पहचान मिली और लोहाघाट इसका एक हिस्सा बना। वर्ष 2000 में लोहाघाट वर्तमान नये राज्य उत्तराखंड का भाग बना जो तब उत्तरांचल कहलाता था। ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- State Uttarakhand District(s) Champawat Population 5,828 (2001) Density 1,295 /km2 (3,354 /sq mi) Time zone IST (UTC+5:30) Area 4.5 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi) Elevation 1,754 metres (5,755 ft)
