India’s first planned city, is a rich, prosperous, spic and span, green city rightly called “ THE CITY BEAUTIFUL ”. चंडीगढ़ सिटी को 'सिटी ब्यूटिफुल' भी कहा जाता है। इस खूबसूरत सिटी के जन्म की कहानी 1947 में हुए दंगा-फसाद और हत्या से भरे भारत-पाक बंटवारे से जुड़ी है। अगर यह विभाजन न होता तो शायद चंडीगढ़ सिटी भी न होती। सरकार ने यह तय किया कि इस पंजाब की राजधानी के लिए चंडीगढ़ नाम से नई सिटी बसाई जाए। स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू ने इस नई सिटी के बारे में कहा कि ऐसा शहर बसाया जाय जो भारत की आजादी का प्रतीक हो और एक नए राष्ट्र का अच्छे भविष्य में विश्वास जगाए। इसलिए चंडीगढ़ को बसाने के लिए ऐसी साइट फाइनल की गई जो राष्ट्रीय राजधानी दिल्ली के निकट थी, वहां पानी की सप्लाई अच्छी थी, नेचुरल ड्रैनेज था, भूमि उपजाऊ थी और यह जगह सुंदर पहाड़ियों के बीच थी जहां का मौसम भी बहुत खुशनुमा था। यहां से चंडीगढ़ शहर बसाने की असली कवायद शुरू हुई। चीफ इंजीनियर वर्मा के साथ तीन आर्किटेक्ट्स लगाए गए। मैक्सवेल फ्राई, उनकी बीवी जेन बी ड्रयू और लि कोर्बुजियर के भतीजे पीयरे जीनेरेट। इन सीनियर आर्किटेक्ट्स की सहायता के लिए अन्य आर्किटेक्ट्स लगाए गए जिनमें एम एन शर्मा, ए आर प्रभावलकर और अन्य शामिल थे। मास्टर प्लान बनाने की जिम्मेदारी ली कोर्बुजियर को दी गई। सबने एक ऐसा डिजाइन तैयार किया जिसमें कैपिटल कॉम्प्लेक्स, स्कूल्स, शॉपिंग सेंटर्स, हॉस्पिटल्स सहित सरकारी कर्मचारियों के रहने के लिए हाउसिंग कालोनीज का नक्शा खींचा गया था- एक ऐसी सिटी जिसका इंफ्रस्ट्रक्चर वेल प्लान्ड था। इस तरह से शिवालिक की पहाड़ियों के बीच यह सिटी बनकर तैयार हुआ। यह जवाहर लाल नेहरू की ड्रीम सिटी थी। चंडीगढ़ भारत के बीसवीं सदी में मॉडर्न आर्किटेक्चर और अर्बन प्लानिंग का बेहद सफल प्रयोग माना जाता है।
