Kangra valley is situated in the shadows of Dhauladhar range and the Shivaliks. The historical hill station is identified as Nagarkot of bygone years. One of the chief political bastions during ancient times, the city has several historic testimonies reflecting town’s famed past.
Kangra Fort, also known as the Nagarkot, is one of the significant attractions of the town. Located at the confluence of the rivers Banganga and Manjhi, the fortress is placed on an elevated platform of 350 ft above sea level. The fort is enclosed within high ramparts and thick walls stretching over 4 km. Among major attractions of the fort are Ranjit Singh Gate, Watch Tower, Sheesh Mahal, Laxmi Narayan Temple and Adinath Temple.
There are several noteworthy rock-cut temples in and around the town, Masrur being the most notable among these. Religious shrines such as Chamunda Devi, Baijnath and Jawalamukhi in the close proximity are thronged by devotees and tourists round the year. Other popular attractions of Kangra are Behna Mahadev Temple, Brajeshwari Temple, Kangra Art Gallery, Karaeri Lake, Sujanpur Fort and Judges Court.
