Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, founded in 1953, is a UGC registered College [under 2f] & accredited by NAAC. A group of dedicated men, led by Dr. Satish Bose, a noted social worker, took the initiative in establishing this institution on 19 Sept. 1953 and named it after one of the most illustrious sons of Barrackpore and India. The institution initially functioned from DebiprasadHigh School and in 1954 was shifted to 6 Riverside Road as an institution affiliated to the University of Calcutta. In 1969, the college bought a plot of land at 85 Middle Road for further expansion. From the session 2008-09, the college will be affiliated to the West Bengal State University,Barasat, 24 Pgs(N) as per government Gazette.

Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya, a co-educational day College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta (date of affiliation: 29.07.1968), was founded in Monirampore, under Barrackpore Sub-division of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, by Late Swami Jyotirmoyananda Giri Maharaj, in the sacred memory of his preceptor Late Swami Mahadevananda Giri Maharaj, on the auspicious day of Janmashtami, and the Independence Day, the 15th of August, 1968. The 15th of August being a holiday, the 16th of August has been officially declared as the Foundation Day of the College.

It came into being at the initiative of a band of young Sannyasis and Brahmacharis dedicated to the welfare of the poorest of poor of this country with a view to realizing the Highest Truth in life through selfless service to suffering humanity irrespective of any distinction in their caste, creed and religion. The Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission came into existence as a Registered Society on November 1, 1976 and started working on and from the 1st of January, 1977 with only 20 Tribal children on roll....
