Thiruvananthapuram, formerly known as Trivandrum, is the capital of the Indian state of Kerala. It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the "Evergreen city of India", the city is characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills and busy commercial alleys. An area of about 250 square kilometres between Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea comprise the city of Trivandrum.It is the largest and most populous city in Kerala. It is an IT hub of the state with over 80% of the state's software exports. History: Trivandrum is an ancient city the traces of which can be found as early as 1000 B.C. Even then the city was an established trade and commerce centre. For a great period the city was ruled by 'Ays' which were subsequently over throned by the Venad rulers in the 10 century. The city was made the capital of Travancore in the year 1745 during the reign of Marthanda Varma and that changed the outlook of this ancient city. Thus started the growth and development of the city on modern lines and the region soon gained immense popularity. The city is one of the primary commercial and industrial areas located in the state of Kerala.
