The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, formerly the University of Roorkee, is a public institution of higher learning located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India.
The history of the Institute goes back to 1847 when a College of Civil Engineers was established at Roorkee in British India by the then lieutant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1853 and was given university status in 1949. In 2001, the University of Roorkee was converted into an Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) by an act of Parliament, thus becoming the seventh IIT created in independent India.The Institute has, thus, a rich heritage, healthy traditions, and long experience in imparting technical education.
