Sparta was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the River Eurotas in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC, when the invading Dorians subjugated the local, non-Dorian population. From 650 BC, following the reforms of Lycurgus, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.
Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars. The last stand of King Leonidas and his force of 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae against a massive Persian army galvanized Greek resistance to the Persian invasion, leading to the decisive victory over the Persians by a Spartan-led coalition a year later at the Battle of Plataea.
The name Sparta is a symbol of the eternal fearless spirit of the ancient Spartans, the spirit that enabled even a handful of warriors to fight the massive army of Persia and leave a very strong mark in the history by making one of the most famous last stands ever. Sparta is not just a name, it is an ideology. It is attitudes which will help the students survive the highs and lows of life and career bravely with the Spartan spirit.
