Government Engineering College Thrissur is a engineering college situated in Thrissur city of Kerala, India. It is the second oldest engineering college established in Kerala and the first engineering college to be established after the formation of Kerala state. The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut.In 2009, LiveMint (online news portal) rated GECT among the top 50 government engineering colleges in India. Further, the college was awarded ISO 9001:2008 certification from the Indian Registry of Quality Systems in 2012.HistoryThe college was initially located at the Maharaja's Technological Institute Chembukkavu campus in 1957. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the late Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on 26 April 1958. The college shifted to its present campus in October, 1960. The college was formally inaugurated by late Pattom A. Thanu Pillai, Chief Minister of Kerala on 2 February 1962. The campus is spread over an area of 120 acres (0.49 km2) and is located at Ramavarmapuram which is 5 km from the heart of Thrissur city and 6 km from Thrissur Railway station.

The college was initially under the Madras University. Now it is affiliated to the University of Calicut.HistoryThe idea of starting a new college at Thrissur City originated from a committee of prominent citizens of Thrissur, in response to strong public demand. The members of the committee armed with the moral support of the public besides a few promises of financial backing approached "His Highness" the then Maharajah of Kochi to enlist His Highness sympathy and blessing for the venture. His Highness in his turn was gracious enough to allow free use of the Merry Lodge Palace and the naming of the college as after "His Highness", Sree Kerala Varma College. COCHIN BRIDGE bridge and the rail line to Kochi were completed in 1902 at the cost of 84 lakh rupees by Shri Rama Varma Thampuran, the farsighted Maharaja of Kochi, who reigned from the year 1895 till 1914. It was the first to ford this river that obstructed passage between Malabar and the southern states of Kochi/Travancore. The first freight train passed over the bridge on 2nd June 1902 and a few days later on the 16th the first passenger train made the journey from Shornur to Kochi on this line.
