DistinctiveFeatures
Perhaps, our most distinctive characteristic is the perceptive freedom we allow to every young student to excel in his chosen field of endeavour and interest. That is one reason, we believe, that has helped us in moulding career of some of the best young men of this region. Offering of maximum facilities to the students so that they fulfil their potential has been the hallmark of the college. All incentives in the college, be they in the form of special coaching or counselling, extra books, sports equipment, free concessions, stipends, scholarships, etc. have not really to be applied for. They are theirs for the taking for the deserving students in all fields of academic, extra curricular and sports activities. All this has led the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) to declare the college as the “Model College” and the Panjab University to recogonise it as an institution with “Potential for Excellence”. The moment of crowning glory remains the award of A+Grade by NAAC to us.
The infrastructure and student support facilities available in the college have enabled us to remain on top in the region. Our students continue to bag top positions in studies. We have successfully launched post-graduate programmes in I.T., Commerce, English, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Maths, Zoology, Psychology, Public Administration and Sociology; and P.G. Diplomas in various fields. Our 4 year B.P. Ed. Programme has also been well received. This year we are starting M.B.E.
We have now won The Sir Shadi Lal Shield for General Efficiency and Excellence in Sports-a trophy given to the best college in sports amongst the 110 colleges affiliated to the Panjab University-35 years in a row. We have produced 54 International Sportsmen like the legendary Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh, Yograj, Dinesh Mongia and Jeev Milkha Singh. This tradition is alive and kicking even today. Our latest sensation is the international woman golfer Irina Brar. Young scholars, almost every year, inspired and fired by glowing examples of their predecessors do their best to maintain the high levels of excellence that are very rarely achieved elsewhere. When they come here success is only a sacred word in their prayers, when they leave success is actually a solid weapon in their hands. With this weapon they proceed to win all battles of life.
Our achievements have enabled us to play host to four Vice-Presidents, one Prime Minister, several Union Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers and other dignitaries. They have graced many an occasion in the college and blessed and motivated the students and staff.
Social Commitment
A practical demonstration of our students’ attitude can be seen in the concern they develop for their country and their community. They actively imbibe the spirit of social service and many of them join the arm forces. To the martyrs from our college, we have dedicated our Administrative Block and named it ‘Shaurya Bhavan’. The idea of service to the community and the nation is reinforced through the homage that is paid to the martyrs at their memorial in the college before the start of any function by all dignitaries visiting the college from time to time. Our students involve themselves in programmes like Blood Donation, Drug-de-addiction, AIDS awareness, Pulse Polio Campaign and service to the blind, etc. We have also joined a project to give shelter to street children.
Teaching / Learning and Evaluation
The college enjoys its enviable position because of effective teaching-learning and evaluation processes. Students are selected on the basis of their past academic performance after an interview.
They are provided appropriate counselling at the time of admission. Their knowledge, skills and attendance in class are regularly monitored and their parents are kept posted with their wards’ performance. Almost all departments have a success rate in excess of 90% in the university exams. A system of continuous assessment of students has been introduced. The faculty, which remains constantly on its toes in upgrading itself and its methods, keeps a keen eye on the activities of the youngsters. Students are encouraged to develop one or the other interest, hobby, beyond their studies and their participation in college activities is rewarded accordingly.
The courses set by the University are covered intensively with the help of all available teaching aids available in the college. The faculty use computers/ multimedia/ audiovisual aids to make lectures interesting. A variety of teaching methods combining the traditional lecture with laboratory-based practicals, tutorials and seminar teaching, wherever required, are employed. Term wise teaching plans and unitized syllabi help the students/ teachers gauge their performance and progress. Regular tests, mock competitive tests, and other subject related quizzes, contests, etc. are arranged to monitor students’ reading, and for creating interest in and awareness of the subjects. All departments have their own subject societies for arranging extra-curricular activities.
Research Cell
A research cell has been established in the college with a corpus of Rupees 10 lacs to promote research temperament and culture. Seven major and four minor projects sponsored by the U.G.C. and other funding agencies have been undertaken by the faculty for which a grant of Rs. 4,35,66,893/- was received during the session 2005-06 from various agencies.
Senior Citizens Programmes
DAV College has been actively engaged, in caring for its Senior Citizens, apart from its regular academics and sports. Every year at least 2 batches of senior citizens, about 100 in number attend the Computer Literacy Programme, free of cost, for a month or so. They are taught basics of Computers Operation, which consist of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet. Keeping up with the changing times, it is very necessary that every citizen should be technologically savvy and familiar with the developments in this field. The programme was started in November, 2004 and so far 550 citizens have been benefited from this course.
