Kozhikode
Calicut is a big town present on the Malabar Coast of Kerala. The other name of the town is Kozhikode. It has been the main centre for trading of spices on the western coast of India during the ancient medieval period. In the world history it has gained importance as one of the beautiful and historical city. It is a wonderful place for the tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding atmosphere. These back waters of Calicut have a self supporting ecosystem. A wide network of canals, estuaries, lakes and river deltas of nearly 44 rivers is present. These rivers drain into the Arabian Sea.
The Pookot lake, the museum of Pazhassiraja, the waterfalls of Thusharagiri, a famous bird sanctuary, the temple of Thali, Light house, a Dolphin house, the dam site of Peruvannamuzhlia, Kakkayam, and a Lions park are some of the attractive places of tourism present in Calicut. Some of the famous temples are the temples of Mahaganapathy, Mahadeva, Azhakodi, Thiruvachira etc. It has a tropical mode of climate. Another important feature of Calicut is that the literacy level is around 100%. The famous rivers like the Mahe, Murad, Korapuzha, Kallai and Chaliyar pass through the Calicut and drain into Arabian Sea.
Calicut has a very good transportation system. It has connections of rail and airways to all other major cities of India. The nearest railway station is the Kozhikode one and the Karipur airport is the nearest one. Majority of the people of Calicut are dependent on fishing. The economic growth of Calicut is mainly dependent on Agricultural sector. A famous ship building industry is present at Beypore. It is one of the major shipping harbors of Kerala present near Calicut.
