Calicut is a big town present on the Malabar Coast of Kerala. The other name of the town is Kozhikode. It has been the main centre for trading of spices on the western coast of India during the ancient medieval period. Another important feature of Calicut is that the literacy level is around 100%. The famous rivers like the Mahe, Murad, Korapuzha, Kallai and Chaliyar pass through the Calicut and drain into Arabian Sea. Calicut has a very good transportation system. It has connections of rail and airways to all other major cities of India. The nearest railway station is the Kozhikode one and the Karipur airport is the nearest one. Majority of the people of Calicut are dependent on fishing. The economic growth of Calicut is mainly dependent on Agricultural sector. A famous ship building industry is present at Beypore. It is one of the major shipping harbors of Kerala present near Calicut.
