Technical education was one of the foremost priorities in the education policy when the country was struggling to stand on its own feet after independence. After the partition of the country, north Bengal witnessed a huge influx of displaced people from across the border. It was felt at that time that technical education might partly address the problem of growing unemployment among the Diaspora. At the same time, the tea industry- a pivotal economic force at that time in this region- needed technical experts in good numbers. With such a backdrop, His Highness Dr. Kailash Nath Katzu, Governor of West Bengal on The 15th August 1950, inaugurated the Jalpaiguri Polytechnic Institute. Some of the prominent tea-tycoons at that time played active roles in establishing the Polytechnic. Initially students had been admitted to one-year trade courses of branches like Carpentry, Masonry, Blacksmithy, Tailoring, and Fitter etc. The only diploma course started simultaneously with the trade courses was the diploma in Civil Engineering. The institution began its activity at ‘Patgola’ near Kadamtala, Jalpaiguri.It was shifted to its present location at Denguajhar on the 15th June, 1951. The diploma courses in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering were introduced in the year of 1958. Jalpaiguri Polytechnic has been functioning as Government Polytechnic since 15th February 1978 when this polytechnic was taken under the full administrative control of the Government of West Bengal. To keep pace with the rapidly changing scenario of the technical science, Diploma course in Electronics and Telecommunication as well as a Post Diploma Course in Computer Application (PDCA) have been introduced since the year of 1996.

Jalpaiguri Zilla School was established in 1876 during the British era. It is an esteemed educational institution of North Bengal and an establishment to be proud of. The red brick main building on the bank of River Teesta is a Land Mark of Jalpaiguri. It is a treasure base of West Bengal and has produced hundreds of good Statesmen for the Country and the World so far. The culture of North Bengal, the greenery of rain forests of Jalpaiguri dooars, proximity of a mighty river Teesta just along side, Lush green paddy fields close by, proximity of Tea Gardens and views of snow capped Himalayan Range including Kanchenjunga has made it a ideal location for grooming young brains to matured Statesmen. Jalpaiguri has occupied a special position in the History of Bengal as well as India. It has so far produced best of Freedom fighters, Statesmen, Industrialists, Educationists, Philanthropists, Doctors, Engineers, Teachers, Poets, Artists and Sportsmen for the Country and the back bone for most of them was Jalpaiguri Zilla School. From 2012,Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College has become the first government engineering college to get the autonomous status in the state. Naturally this one is a great achievement of this 50 year old college.JGEC is the third oldest among all technical institutions of the state after BESU and IIT KGP.The UGC team visited the college on December 22 ,2011. The college is now autonomous in all types of academic affairs .The parent university will no longer directly interfere into college academics.The college itself will create syllabus of different semesters and evaluate the students on its own .Now the college is looking for the deemed status to be the third deemed technical university after JU and BESU. Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College established in 1961 is a premier Engineering College in the State of West Bengal. The College is situated at the outskirt of Jalpaiguri Town, the Divisional HQ of seven Districts of North Bengal. The College offers Bachelor degrees (B.Tech) in six branches and Master degrees (M.Tech) in two branches of Engineering.University Grants Commision(UGC) declared Jalpaiguri Govt Engg College to be an autonomous institution on 12th December, 2011. The 50 year old institution is all set to open various other branches like BBA, BCA etc., and fulfil other criteria for becoming an A-class University. The new-batch that makes entry into the institution(through JEE 2012 onwards) won't get certificates affiliated from West Bengal University Of Technology. Also declared that after four years, the college would be no longer just an Engineering College, rather a University, the name of which is yet to be decided .
