The oldest technical institute of Asia.1847:College of Civil Engineering,1853:Thomason College of Civil Engineering,1947:University of Roorkee,2001: IIT This institute has a number of first in its pocket e.g. : The first train engine of India was used from Roorkee to Piran Kaliyar (Uttarakhand) for pulling logs for building the first aqueduct of India, the first software company of India - Patni Computers was established by Mr. Narendra Patni a graduate of Roorkee (BS) and MIT (MS) in 1985. In 2011 the institute has completed its 164 years of existence. According to IIT Roorkee's website, ten alumni have won Padma Bhushan awards and 25 have been Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology awardees. The institute has produced seven chairmen of the Indian Railway Board, chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, more than a hundred secretary-level officers in the Government of India, two presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry, six directors of IITs, and presidents of bodies related to engineers and scientists like the Indian Institution of Engineers, the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

In this view creativity is the first and necessary thing for Innovation but not sufficient. Students' Activity Forum, Intellectual Property Rights Cell, IIT Roorkee is a student body dynamically involved in helping the students of IIT Roorkee generate innovative ideas, communicate new technologies and develop the skills that can make a difference between success and failure. SAF is focused on creating awareness among the students about Innovation and things pertaining to IP culture by means Lectures, Workshops, Technical Competitions, etc. It targets to create an environment of creativity where "CRAZY IDEAS" flourish. Most importantly, SAF also assists students in availing financial aid to transform an innovative idea into demonstrable model under the Technopreneurship Promotion Programme (TePP) of Department of Science and Industrial Research, Govt. of India. We believe- "The pursuit to excellence involves continuously exploring new ideas and exploiting them for sustainable growth".
